Interesting to see SWING PARADE on the list. Although it's public domain, and home video copies of varying quality from 16mm source(s) have been available for years, this DVD-r should be sourced from the Monogram Studios material housed in the Warner vaults, which most likely is 35mm. Whether Warner is working from a negative, an original positive, or a dupe is the question.

Wow, I'm impressed. WHAT, NO BEER? has been on my WA wishlist for awhile. The plot looks interesting and I haven't met much Keaton talkie-era stuff I haven't liked. I'll have to look into those other Keaton titles as well - has anyone seen any of them (including WHAT, NO BEER?)

The Keaton MGM talkies get a pretty bad rap-"Speak Easily" seems to be the only one film historians like - but I find them enjoyable. Just don't go into them with high expectations and you'll have a reasonable good time. They're certainly worth purchasing if you're a Keaton fan.

I have a question about The Lost Stooges...

If I pick up this DVD, do I really need to get Hollywood Party and Swing Parade, as footage from these is included in The Lost Stooges?

I mean, I realize I wouldn't be seeing the the entirety of those movies, but if my primary interest is the Stooges' footage in them, then am I better off with The Lost Stooges?  (In other words, does The Lost Stooges contain all the Stooge footage from those two movies, or just snippets/highlights?)

That being said, I've never seen a clip from FUGITIVE LOVERS, BROADWAY TO HOLLYWOOD, or TURN BACK THE CLOCK. And I'm sure Maltin, who has been to The Stoogeum, is a great narrator.

SWING PARADE was a Stooges feature film, not a film they merely had a cameo in. SWING PARADE is not seen in LOST STOOGES and definitely merits its own purchase.

THE LOST STOOGES (1990) is a retrospective of Ted Healy & His Stooges' 1932 - 1933 MGM work.

SWING PARADE OF 1946 (1946) was a Monogram Studios release, and footage is not in THE LOST STOOGES.

HOLLYWOOD PARTY (1934) was an all-star [disjointed] comedy. THE LOST STOOGES does not include clips featuring Laurel & Hardy, Jimmy Durante, Jack Pearl, the Disney cartoon, etc.

Warner Archive just extended their "Black Friday" promotion, extending it to November 21 and the majority of its catalog title are eligible.

 -  Currently, all 3 Stooge titles (see above) are listed at 33% off.

For those who may not be aware - I didn't know it until after I bought it - the dvd of "Party" features the chocolate soliders cartoon restored in color, though I don't know if it's colorized or the original colored version. Either way, it looks very good. The dvd also includes the original trailer which I don't recall seeing anywhere else, and yes, it does include Healy and the Stooges. So even if you already have "Party" on video, or on the dvd that was released in Germany, you may want to double dip and pick this one up.

I only recently purchased the Warner Archives DVD of SWING PARADE OF 1946 (figuring I could wait for a sale, as I've had several older copies of the movie for years in other formats anyway).
I was pleased to see that the picture quality is very good, in fact excellent, so it is recommended for that reason. But for purists, it should be noted that their print appears to be from a British source (presented by Pathe Pictures Ltd. instead of Monogram Pictures) and that the movie's title has been shortened to SWING PARADE.

One very cool thing about the Warner Archive DVD of HOLLYWOOD PARTY that I'm surprised I haven't been reading more raves about, since it is SO COOL!! is that as extra material on the DVD (in addition to the trailer) there are 38 minutes of rare audio material: unreleased, alternate or deleted songs and musical numbers. Nothing Stooges or Laurel & Hardy-related, but for fans of the movie, it's great stuff!

Yep. I experimented with editing Swing Parade down to a pure two-reeler-length Stooges short, and the lowest I could get it down to (so far) has been in the 30-35 minutes range. So it's got plenty of Moe, Larry, & Curly action, all right -- and the occasional syrupy romantic & musical distractions are brief and easy enough to skim through.

Sounds good.  I really want to get "Hollywood Party."  I've seen that and I know it's very entertaining.  As for "Swing Parade,"  I have it already from Legend Films and it has some really good bonus features and the commentary (rifftrax) from Mike Nelson is almost worth the price of admission, alone.

As for "The Lost Stooges,"  I think they should restore all those shorts from MGM and release them uncut as a single disc.

All they need is a single disc with "Nertsery Rhymes," "Beer And Pretzels," "Plane Nuts," "The Big Idea," and "Roast Beef And Movies."  Now, that would be cool!  Well, just as long as "Nertsery Rhymes" and "Roast Beef And Movies" are actually shown in their original technicolor.

I haven't watched it in a while but I think the Stooges footage from Hollywood Party is on the Lost Stooges DVD. As far as the Laurel and Hardy scenes in Hollywood Party, they are on the DVD with the Devil's Brother and Bonnie Scotland.

Bootleg quality. Blurry, over-bright vhs dub, but watchable. Will look crap on a hd tv.

Also of note: The copy I have seems to have anachronistic Columbia sound effects added to the slaps and bonks. Must've been done for a later release or just for tv, a-la the "sweetening" of Grips, Grunts and Groans included on the old "All the World's a Stooge" dvd. Maybe someone down the line thought that even the pre-Columbia Stooges needed those sound effects?

I recognize 2 of those titles--3 of a Kind and Trouble Chasers. Those would be the features Shemp made at Monogram pictures in the mid to late 40s with Billy Gilbert and Maxie Rosenbloom.

I've never heard of a title "Ghost Crazy" though--perhaps archiezappa was thinking about the film Crazy Knights--also a Shemp Monogram feature...
