Thanks for the reminder, Brent.  I think I've still got this on tape somewhere, but I've been cleaning out my VHS tapes and I'm not sure where that one has got to; I may have given it away.  In any case I haven't seen Captain in a long time, so I set the DVR this morning when I saw this post.   ;)

At least IFC shows the Stooges' shorts uninterrupted, unlike AMC.

I don't subscribe to any premium packages through Comcast, but I get IFC as well as Encore as part of my "digital classic" package, so it may not be a premium channel on all systems.

I checked IFC's website. The Stooges are on from 2am to 3am EDT weeknights, & from 12 noon to 2:05pm EDT on Saturday.

I missed a couple of the shorts today, but I was busy watching FRANKENFISH on SyFy.

So who has been watching TCM today? All this stuff (outside of the Marx/L&H fare) was new to me, but most of it was quite good. A PIP FROM PITSBURGH was especially strong, as was SHOW BUSINESS. Todd and Pitts were good together.

TCM Thelma Todd Day - schedule update:

Three more shorts were added to the schedule, all one-reelers to fill time between the scheduled films:
A Robert Benchley short that's already over (sorry it's too late, if anyone wanted to catch that one!)
And the 1931 Vitaphone short THE GRAND DAME (Patsy Kelly's first film).
And the color Laurel & Hardy short THE TREE IN A TEST TUBE (1941). It will be interesting to see what kind of a print they have on this one. Real, good color copies are rare.

Check the TCM schedule for times.

I didn't have time to see them all, but I really liked the ones I saw. You're right, Thelma & Zasu made a good duo. Plus, it was fun to see some dames doing physical comedy.

So who has been watching TCM today? ... SHOW BUSINESS. Todd and Pitts were good together.
SHOW BUSINESS (1932) is of perhaps more interest to Three Stooges fans than others in the series, as it was remade four years later as a Three Stooges short: A PAIN IN THE PULLMAN.
SHOW BUSINESS is also the only Hal Roach studios film directed by future Stooges director Jules White, and is the only Roach film in which Monte Collins appears.
Also watch for a young beautiful and blonde Paulette Goddard as one of the showgirls on the train.

Yes, I was watching TCM most of the day!  A PIP FROM PITTSBURGH was my favorite of the day (and not because I live in Pittsburgh). I thought Charley Chase was hillarious.

Thelma sure looked heavy in the Wheeler & Woolsey film HIPS HIPS HOORAY.

I wasn't home for Thelma Todd day, this thing called work, and my DVR situation ain't topsy turvy now.  A shame.  I really would've liked to have seen some of those films, especially the Roach shorts.

I do have WHISPERING WHOOPEE on DVD, always liked that one.  BROADMINDED is one of those absolute pleasures if you're a Bela Lugosi fan like me.  A genuine chnace to see him do comedy.....when it's meant to be a comedy, and he's great.
- Doug Sarnecky

Offline falsealarms

I should have recognized Goddard in that short... not sure what I didn't see.

Be it PULLMAN, or BERTH MARKS, or PARDON MY BERTH MARKS, or SHOW BUSINESS.... I haven't seen a short set on a train that hasn't been at least good.

CATCH AS CATCH CAN was also a great effort. Billy Gilbert was great as the ring announcer. Guinn "Big Boy" Williams, who played a boxer here, would go on to work with Shemp in the GLOVESLINGERS series.

Leonard Maltin chimed in on Thelma Todd day a couple days ago: http://blogs.indiewire.com/leonardmaltin/archives/2010/08/29/its_thelma_todd_day_on_tcm#

Maybe if you told her you can have a drinking game where everyone takes a shot when a dead person is on the screen, she would've let you.

You only get college once, so there's no better time in your life to pester your roomates.

Ah, college. Usually, that would have gotten in the way for me as well. But I graduated a few months ago. I would have been pissed if I had to miss the day portion of that marathon. I would have been like "well, it's the first day of the semester so I wouldn't miss anything... but I really should go." I probably would have went, albeit begrudgingly.

I can't say enough about A PIP FROM PITTSBURG. That was one helluva short. It was essentially my introduction into Chase's Roach shorts and what an intro it was. I could see the same plot still work 79 years later. "A man reluctantly agrees to go on a blind date to help out his friend, but tries to make himself as off-putting as possible beforehand."

My first semester in college, I was the guy who sat in his dorm who would skip class, wearing a Judas Priest t-shirt and a Metallica jean jacket, blasting Motorhead all day.  There weren't many like me in the late 90's let me assure you.  In spite of the stereotype, I was not, or ever have been, a heavy drinker or into drugs.  That said, I was a total class skipper until I figured out my major.  I would've have easily skipped class for a Thelma Todd marathon if I was into that kind of thing back then, (I didn't develop old comedy tastes until a few years later).

I've heard great things about THE PIP FROM PITTSBURGH, it's supposed to be his best talkie.

I took forever to figure out my major (Sociology) but in the end wasn't really into that either. I don't drink at all, so I wasn't really typical either.

It might be. I had always associated THE HECKLER with him. Even though I've yet to see the latter, if someone did word association with me last week and said "Charley Chase talkie," I'd have said THE HECKLER. Of course, that was re-done with Shemp in 1946 as MR. NOISY.

I was a Sociology major - for one semester.  I have an English degree.  Eet survd mee wel.

You mentioning THE HECKLER reminds me, a Chase (and Langdon) Columbia set would be great.  I know this will be blasphemy to say on this site, but I'd rather see those shorts than the Besser and Deritas, and equally as much as the Shemps.

That's the same way I felt beforehand as well, but I knew I had to remember that school comes first, just like it did in high school.  I thought about asking her, but then I figured I should probably do my biology, lol.

And by the way, metal, I'm going for my BA in English, only I'm looking into getting my teaching credentials.  Speaking of English, it is now 10:27 AM and I better get to Linguistics!  Have a nice day, everyone!
