Title: Name that supporting player
Post by: ProfessorStooge on September 21, 2009, 12:05:03 PM
For this topic, simply guess which Stooges supporting player played the characters listed. Three character names will be given. Whoever guesses the right actor or actress will ask the next question.

Here are the first three characters:

Cecil Z. Swinehardt

Count Alfred Gehrol

Mr. Gigi

With an imdb search............

Hey Rob,

Have you ever considered adding Three Stooges Filmography (http://threestooges.net/filmography.php) and Cast Member (http://threestooges.net/cast.php) databases and functions to this site?  Crew (http://threestooges.net/crew.php) too.

Each film's entry (http://threestooges.net/episode.php?id=166) could display its cast & crew information (http://threestooges.net/episode.castcrew.php?id=166), and all that could be cross-linked into the databases for each cast or crew member (http://threestooges.net/cast.php?id=425). Sure it'd be a lot of work... probably take years... but we could make the information much more complete and reliable than other websites, so there wouldn't be a need for readers to go to imdb, wikipedia, etc.

What'a'ya think?

I dunno - sounds like a awful lot of work to me, and would anyone actually use it?    ;D

(Feeling just a bit under appreciated?)   ;)

That's John Tyrell.

How about the judge in "Disorder in the Court"? I don't recall him having a name in that short. (Hint: He was also the judge in "Reefer Madness").

The judge was Edward LeSaint, who on this site is listed as Captain Burke in "Half-Shot Shooters," which is impossible because they looked totally different, even in age.

How about this one:
Mr. Amscray
Pedro Ruiz
Jerry the insurance salesman
Blackie (of Blackie & Doyle)

He was in "Half-Shot Shooters," but he didn't play Burke.  He was the guy behind the desk, who asked the Stooges questions, but they couldn't hear him.

Okay, we'll try this one. I listed 4 characters, but 1 of them only has a first name and 2 of them don't have names at all so I used the role description as credited:

You're right. I apologize for my goof. Gene Roth appears as Fuller Grime in the same short, but the supporting player I had in mind is just credited as "Crook".

I need to find a few more shorts where our supporting player actually had a name. He is in so many, but I didn't realize how many times he appears without a name until I started looking up some of his roles.

How about a hint: In the short where he is credited as "Herman", his name is not spoken, but it appears in the logo on the driver's side door of his car (near the beginning of the short).

Title: Re: Name that supporting player
Post by: Dog Hambone on March 31, 2010, 08:59:54 AM
Since I started participating in this quiz, I've noticed how many supporting actors appear in several Stooges shorts as characters without a name. This woman is apparently one of them.

I thought I gave a pretty good hint with the census reference. To the best of my memory, there were only 2 shorts that involved them being census takers; one with Curly & one with Shemp. There are, however, some Joe Besser shorts that I either haven't seen or I last saw when I was a youngster (hundreds of years ago).

Here's another hint. Sgt Hugh Dare was an army drill sergeant ("Everything happens to me"). In the same short, the Stooges were greeting card salesmen who tried to sell cards to his wife.

I gave out this question back in January 13, & now I can't find my notes, & don't recall what kind of a nurse she was or where. Sorry.

How about:
- Banker
- Stumpy
- Mr. Higgins
- Justice of the Peace

cpp, I'm drawing a blank on this one. Seems like it should be an easy one, but...

The only Justice of the Peace I can recall is Victor Travers, who was a JP in THE THREE TROUBLEDOERS and OILY TO BED, OILY TO RISE (where he was also Uncle Tim). Were there any other characters played by this guy?

General Butts
Lord Wafflebottom
Fuller Rath

That's good ole Bud Jamison, a master of the foreign accent (be it Irish, British, French, etc.)

I don't know of the next guy ever appearing with a character name, but played several notable roles:
Hospital Orderly
Cook
Roadside Worker
Night Watchman
Train Porter

That's Dudley Dickerson, unless anyone has a another name in mind that fits best.

No argument about Dudley Dickerson so far so let's go with another:

- referee
- waiter
- bellboy
- union soldier

No argument at all, cpp. Dudley Dickerson was the right answer.

cpp, are you perhaps referring to Cy Schindell? I don't recall him portraying a bellboy, but he's the only one I can think of who has played the other 3 roles.

Nope, not Cy - Johny Kascier.

Play on if you have one ready.

It always makes it a little harder when you have a supporting player whose character doesn't have a name.

This one should be easy. Looks like all his characters had names.
MacPherson
Chief Rain in the Puss
Prof. Sedletz

No guesses?  It was Heine Conklin.

OK, here's an easier one:
- Gus
- Chief Crazy Horse
- Mr Pardon
Title: Re: Name that supporting player

OK, here's an easier one:
- Gus
- Chief Crazy Horse
- Mr Pardon

Well, I don't think it was all that easy. The actor was Murray Alper. I couldn't recall the names Chief Crazy Horse or Gus from any of the 190 shorts, but he was Mr. Pardon in TRICKY DICKS. It appears the other characters were from the feature length movies, which I haven't seen enough to be very familiar with.

Right now, I can't think of anyone that hasn't been used at least once. Even the previous one, Heinie Conklin has been used twice. If anyone else has one in mind, feel free to go ahead.
