Title: HELLO POP Has Been Found!
Post by: BeAStooge on January 22, 2013, 06:05:16 PM
News from Ron Hutchinson of The Vitaphone Project (http://www.vitaphoneproject.com/)...

Quote
I am happy to announce that The Vitaphone Project has located a complete Technicolor print of the long-lost Stooges 1933 MGM Colortone short HELLO POP! This is the only lost short with all three Stooges, and also stars Ted Healy and Henry Armetta. The 35mm nitrate print was found overseas and after some torturous steps to get the nitrate packaged and shipped, it is today safely in the hands of my friend Eric Aijayla at YCM labs. Ned Price at WB has ensured the funding of the restoration, and ideally we could see this within a year. The sole known print burned in the big MGM fire in the 1960's.

This is spectacular news. Stooge fans everywhere will finally get to see this film. Warner Archive should have all the MGM shorts released on DVD.

At first I was like, April 1st already? And then I saw who posted the thread and my jaw dropped..

I can't wait to see it, to own a copy, and to have it etched into my brain like so much other Stooge material! To me, this is like something new from The Boys, and it's been a long time coming.

This can't get released fast enough!

I've been in the "keep it to yourself" mode for about a month now, so it's nice the news can finally be announced.
We didn't want anything to possibly interfere with the detailed (and "torturous steps" as Ron said) involved in getting the film element into the capable hands of the good folks at the restoration lab.

A 35mm screening print is going to be struck, then as soon as they get to it we should (hopefully) be seeing it on TCM and/or a DVD release, possibly in a set along with the other MGM Stooges shorts.  But that's all down the road...

In 1992 I wrote a detailed article/review of HELLO POP for The Three Stooges Journal and will be writing an updated version including some deatils on the discovery of this print. There may be some Stooges fans who weren't getting the Journals back then who wouldn't have seen my article (or my follow-up on the also lost JAIL BIRDS OF PARADISE) so I'd been planning an update on my article anyway when this exciting news was was told to me.

Unbelievable news. My jaw dropped to the floor. I'm always interested in how lost films are found, especially this one. I'm sure it will be awhile before we get to see it but considering it's a film I realistically never thought I would see, the wait is more than worth it.

Crossing my fingers for Hats Off and Jailbird of Paradise next.  ;)

I will be going into some of the interesting details of HELLO POP's discovery when I update my old Journal article on it.

Regarding those other two lost films you mention, I can't say anything more right now, but I will just say there are a lot more where this one came from! (still being inventoried...)

I am in stunned disbelief. This is huge and amazing news for Stooge fans everywhere!

I remember being at a Stoogeum open house a few years ago and asking Brent and some
others about the possibility of Hello Pop (and Jailbirds of Paradise) ever being found.
So happy that after decades of searching it's finally been recovered!

I can't wait till this is available on DVD!

By the way, regarding HELLO POP, the filmography cast lists on threestooges.net and IMDb need to be corrected - the Duncan Sisters (Vivian and Rosetta) do NOT appear in HELLO POP, so they should be deleted from the cast list. Part of a musical number from their 1929 movie IT'S A GREAT LIFE is used but the part of the number where The Sisters appear is deleted in the footage as it is used in HELLO POP.

I had a feeling, and even emailed Ron Hutchinson about it, since he put some pretty big hints on Facebook.  I knew when he mentioned keeping it a secret until the film got to the US safely. I can only imagine what work it took to ship a nitrate film!

Let's wish the best for the care and restoration of this film!

I'll be very interested to learn the circumstances under which this short was recovered!

As a longtime "Doctor Who" fan, I'm quite familiar with the lengths to which people have gone to recover long-lost films, and the improbable places where they've been discovered, so this should be fascinating...

This is wonderful news.  While I'm not expecting a classic by any means, any new Stooge footage is always welcome.  I just hope the boys get a scene or two where they really shine.

"I've got it, the Puckerless Persimmon!  You're worth 10 grand ta' me!"   All kidding aside, I didn't believe it at first (found out via Facebook).  I had to re-read it a few times.  Excited would be an understatement for me; the fact that we now have one, precious copy of this film (literally - 35mm nitrate), I'm speechless.  I'm sure there will be many discussions about about this at the annual meeting, in May (which I'm definitely looking forward to).

By the way, a big 'hiya' to everyone.  I've been absent from the boards for a while.  Glad to be back.  [pie]

One of my favorite routines from the film is a more complete version of one they did later at Columbia:

Ted is about to hit Curly.
Moe: "Don't hit him on the head, you know he's not normal."
Larry: "I am!"
So Moe hits Larry! Hey, he asked for it, didn't he!

Aw, man!  I can't believe it!  I'm hoping for a DVD set featuring all the Stooges MGM short subjects.  I guess the next one is "Jailbirds Of Paradise."  I wonder about "Stop! Sadie Stop!"

This is great!  I'd love to see all these get restored/remastered, just like the Columbia short subjects.  This find is just the thing to make that a reality.  Awesome!

Additional details, from Paul Brennan in Sydney, Australia...

Quote
The long lost 1933 MGM Technicolor THREE STOOGES two reeler HELLO POP has been discovered intact on 35mm in Australia.

My name is Paul Brennan, I live in Sydney Australia and I find lost films. I recently was advised by Ron Hutchinson of THE VITAPHONE PROJECT that a nearby collector (in Sydney) had many decades ago rescued the sole surviving copy and had carefully preserved it. I know the collector and met with him. As I was, he was enthusiastic to see the print repatriated to the US. With costs covered and handshakes all round, HELLO POP is now safely back in the US for full restoration, and will take it's place among titles yearned for by US fans and collectors.

I have been lucky enough to know Australian collectors and meet with execs of US film heritage, and you can cheer the wonderful happy collaborations that allow finds like this be sent home to be celebrated properly. It really doesn't belong to us as it is American screen fun we love, and often so much that we cannot bear to see it destroyed. As a result some essential Hollywood history has been squirreled away here for future generations to jump with joy. Here is a genuine good news story for all Stooges fans from the nice people in Sydney Australia.

I was reading all of this info over the last few days and find it amazing. Really looking forward to a viewing either on dvd or TCM for sure. Does anyone have an insight or feeling into what we can expect as far as where "Hello  Pop" may rate in entertainment as compared to the other MGM shorts? The TS Scrapbook hints that reviews were generally good when it was originally released. It should be better than "The Big Idea" anyway eh?

Well, apparently it's the only film with the "don't you dare hit me in the head, you know I'm not normal" bit complete with its punchline (see reply #16), so that's pretty cool at least! Otherwise I would expect at least an average M-G-M Healy/Stooge short, plus the novelty of two-strip Technicolor.

With this find, I have a few questions:

1.  Have the rest of the Stooges' MGM shorts ever been restored?

2.  Will all of these MGM short subjects be restored?

3.  Will there be a DVD release of "Ted Healy & The Three Stooges MGM Collection"?

I haven't posted in quite a while, and here I come by and there's this amazing news.  I always did love those Australians.

So, this is the only other Ted & his Stooges MGM short we've never seen (well, most of us have never seen anyway)?

Ranking my favorites:
Plane Nuts
Beer & Pretzels
Nertsery Rhymes
The Big Idea

For anyone who knows, where does Hello Pop rank in the five?

And here's another vote for a full restoration of all five, plus any other shorts (Roast Beef & Movies, etc) they can put on DVD or blu-ray as official releases.

Since I was aware of this film being missing since about 1984, I have waited for this to turn up, and by Jove it has.  Now for Jailbirds of Paradise.  There is a very strong rumor that all three Stooges appear in this, but separately in different scenes in small roles.

As for the color in Nertsery Rhymes, if M.G.M. has an original print it will look as good as the screen caps of Hello Pop.  I can't confirm this, but I have been told that M.G.M. struck a print of Nertsery Rhymes in the early '70's for the revival house circuit.  One of the old Stooge books has an ad for a '70's showing of this short.  I have also heard rumors that the Stooge affiliated M.G.M. shorts are public domain, I don't know this for sure.  But what I do know is that Thunderbird Films offered a color Nertsery Rhymes in the mid seventies.  It was printed on Eastman stock in which the blue dyes of the film decompose over time.  I'm certain that when some of these minor video companies used Nertery Rhymes, they were undoubtedly using one of these faded prints.  I have Nertsery Rhymes on the Lost Stooges VHS and it looks as good as two strip technicolor can.

Also remember that these Healy-Stooge shorts were not made as short comedies, they were made as musical shorts, incorporating deleted musical scenes from M.G.M. musicals.

Now for Jailbirds of Paradise.  There is a very strong rumor that all three Stooges appear in this, but separately in different scenes in small roles.

Only Moe and Curly appear in JAIL BIRDS OF PARADISE.
Moe has some scenes on his own, then a few with Curly. And they get the final scene in the short.
I wrote a very detailed article on the film back in 1993 in Three Stooges Journal no. 65.

http://threestooges.net/journal/view/65

Since that was 20 years ago and many Stooges fans may not have seen it, I'm thinking of rewriting and revising it in a future Journal.
I was actually about to do a revision/update of my 1992 HELLO POP article just before the film's discovery was announced. So maybe it'll be good luck for JAIL BIRDS OF PARADISE's discovery too, if I do an update of my old article!

Will be traveling on business Wednesday, so here is an early post for Moe Howard's birthday on June 19th.

Here are some frames from the Stooges' long-lost Technicolor short HELLO POP (MGM/'33) which was found in December and is now nearly restored. I will soon be able to announce the short's first screening in 80 years which I will host, and will have pre-show music by the great Peter Mintun . Stay tuned!

Done! My updated article on JAILBIRDS OF PARADISE is in the latest Journal (no. 146). I revised and updated it a bit from the 1993 original.
The short looks like a fun one - I hope we will get to see it some day!

Regarding the theatrical re-premiere of HELLO POP, the place and date have been scheduled, so it really is going to happen! Official announcement coming soon. I've known the place and date for a few weeks now...but have been sworn to secrecy! But I will add that there are some other very rare and cool long-unseen shorts from the period also scheduled. Any Stooges-related? Could Be!

Unfortunately, still no word on exactly if and when HELLO POP will turn up on DVD or TCM for those unable to travel to the theatrical screenings.

Yes, I did enjoy the "Jailbirds" article.  A good read.  Yes, I hope it turns up some day.

I am, of course, all for a DVD release.  I know I won't be able to attend the screening.  I'd love to do so, but since I live in the deep south, I'm nowhere near any theater that would screen such things.

Anyways, this is all very exciting!

Great news for Stooge fans in the L.A. area: The lost-and-found short HELLO POP may be premiering—perhaps a world premiere—at this fall’s Three Stooges Big Screen event, held at Glendale’s historic Alex Theatre on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

On Wednesday, June 19, the selection committee met and universally agreed that it would be great to show HELLO POP this year—if, by some chance, a print became available. Later that day, Frank Gladstone—host and mastermind of the annual festival—emailed us that he had contacted his go-to person at Warner Bros. about the availability of HELLO POP. As Frank wrote in his email:

“(On) returning to my office, an e-mail from (XXX) was waiting for me. It seems that (XXX) has been a regular at our Stooges shows for years and was hoping I would be contacting him. He has already pulled a 35mm print of HELLO POP, just for our show!!!

Now, (…) we will call the show "Hello Pop!" If we promote this well, excitement from Stooge fans will be palpable. We could fill the house! (…) HooHaa, boys and girls. A real coup!”

Yes, a real coup, indeed—whether that's a coup d'état, coup de grâce, or coo coo ca joob! Almost needless to say, I CAN HARDLY WAIT for November!

June 22 update from Ron Hutchinson, on the big-screen re-premiere of HELLO POP (1933)...

(Note:  the Shemp Howard film mentioned is GOBS OF FUN... see the latest issue of The Three Stooges Journal for details on that Vitaphone short subject.)

Will be able to make the big announcement soon on the first screening in 80 years of the long-lost 1933 Technicolor MGM Stooges short, HELLO POP. Per my agreement with Ned Price at WB (a great and supportive guy), the screening will be in 35mm and at Film Forum in NYC later this year.

To fill out the program, we are including other long unseen gems, including LoC's beautiful print of a 1934 Vitaphone comedy which has a previously unknown appearance by Shemp Howard (thanks Rob Stone and Jenny Paxson! ), a 35mm print struck just for us by Bob O'Neil at Universal of Robert Benchley's YOUR TECHNOCRACY AND MINE ('33), some Technicolor fragments courtesy of James Layton of George Eastman House, and possibly one of the just-restored 1929 Columbia Victor Gems from LoC, which used disks I got from Australia a few years ago. For now, just sit tight and salivate in anticipation!

I just may have to find a way to get myself to L.A. over Thanksgiving weekend - I REALLY WANT TO SEE THIS!

By the way, has the complete, color version of 'Nertsery Rhymes' ever been released on DVD? I've just seen it in Black and White.

The more pictures I see and the more I hear about 'Hello Pop' the more excited I get!  [hello2]

As far as I know, no. Although clips of it are on some Goodtimes documentary DVD with pretty nice color as I recall (better than I remember when it aired on TNT). (I think Goodtimes and other distributors assumed the M-G-M Stooge shorts to be public domain, which I don't think they are.) The Stooge M-G-M shorts were released on Laserdisc as part of a collection of various M-G-M shorts in the 1990s. (Except for HELLO POP and JAILBIRDS OF PARADISE, of course.)

As far as DVD, BEER AND PRETZELS is an extra on FLYING DOWN TO RIO, and PLANE NUTS and ROAST-BEEF AND MOVIES are extras on the DANCING LADY DVD -- and I recall the color on ROAST-BEEF being better than I have seen previously.

Just as an aside, I just saw THE BENNY GOODMAN STORY for the first time a few nights ago and who happens to appear in it but George Givot, the "How do ya like that" guy from ROAST-BEEF AND MOVIES, in a straight role and sans the Greek accent (or at least it was toned down)!

For "toned down" Givot, he costars in HOLLYWOOD PARTY (1934) as 'Liondora.'

Any chance of seeing this at any other venues? The theater in my neck of the woods (Times Cinema - Milwaukee, WI) usually has a Stooge weekend every year, along with other classic flicks.

If not, I guess I'll just have to wait for a DVD release, but I won't rest until I've seen this thing!

Jeepers -- it shows how long I've been away from this board that this is fresh news to me!

And here I was excited just to see that TCM is running Captain Hates The Sea later on this week!

BTW: Someone mentioned being generally curious about how lost films turn up -- there's a bit of info along those lines in the following paragraphs. I got this info in an email recently -- don't know if it's been bandied about here yet or not:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NINE ACCIDENTALLY PRESERVED RARE & LOST SILENT FILMS NEWLY RELEASED ON DVD JUNE 11

Renowned Silent Film Accompanist/Historian Ben Model Brings Silent Era Rarities from his
16mm Archive to Classic Film Collectors’ DVD Shelves, Thanks to Kickstarter and Amazon

NEW YORK, N.Y. (WEDNESDAY MAY 29th, 2013) – Accidentally Preserved: Rare & Lost Silent Films from Vintage 16mm Prints, a DVD collection of nine extremely rare silent film shorts, three of which have been lost for decades, return to screens courtesy of a crowd-funded project produced and scored by noted silent film accompanist Ben Model (www.accidentallypreserved.com (http://www.accidentallypreserved.com)). It will be released on June 11 and will be available exclusively online at Amazon.com (http://Amazon.com).

Sourced from the private collection of films owned by Ben Model, Accidentally Preserved consists of nine short films, seven of which feature lesser-known comedians Billy Franey, Wallace Lupino, Paul Parrott (brother of Charley Chase), Clyde Cook and Cliff Bowes. The other two subjects include an early Max Fleischer cartoon in a rare and very sharp print, and a lost/unknown industrial film by and about the Elgin Watch Company.  Each film has a new musical score and was funded entirely via Kickstarter. The collection will be released via Amazon’s “CreateSpace” DVD-on-Demand service.  This is the first time that this new business model for the distribution of silent films will be utilized to make these rarities commercially available to the public after decades of obscurity.

Accidentally Preserved is a project I envisioned purely to ensure that film fans and historians can view these films easily and conveniently on DVD,” says Historian and Silent Film Composer Ben Model.  “I figured, ‘If I have these lost films, and I can’t show them to anyone, then they’re still lost.’ They’ve survived all these decades, thanks to the 16mm film format, and this seemed the most efficient way for them to be seen again.”

Fans of silent film funded the production of this DVD project via Kickstarter to cover costs of film transfers, graphic design, scoring and post-production. This release is the first in a series of volumes. There are another half dozen shorts to release that are personally owned by Ben Model, and other private collectors of 16mm films have offered rare prints from their collections for the Accidentally Preserved series as well.

Accidentally Preserved: Rare & Lost Silent Films from Vintage 16mm Prints sells for $19.95, and will be available June 11, 2013 at Amazon.com. 103 mins, B&W, produced and scored by Ben Model. The films will also be released on Ben Model’s YouTube channel (youtube.com/silentfilmmusic (http://youtube.com/silentfilmmusic)) on a bi-weekly basis starting mid-June.  Film notes were written by noted silent film historian Steve Massa and are available online at www.accidentallypreserved.com (http://www.accidentallypreserved.com).

The term “accidentally preserved” is a phrase coined by Model, referring to silent films that exist only because copies were made on 16mm safety film in the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s for the home rental market – essentially the Netflix of the art deco era. Model is also the archivist for the Ernie Kovacs/Edie Adams collection and has programmed the two “Ernie Kovacs Collection” DVD box sets for Shout Factory. He is based in New York City.  His website is www.silentfilmmusic.com (http://www.silentfilmmusic.com).

It is interesting how these films survived.  There are many people out there that have absolutely no idea what's in their attics/basements/closets/cellars/etc.  And with "Hello Pop" coming back out into the public, I would say that anything is possible along these lines.

Ron Hutchinson @ The Vitaphone Project has announced HELLO POP's unveiling will be at the NYC Film Forum on Sunday September 29 and Monday September 30.

Quote
OK it's official! The first screening of the long lost Stooges Technicolor 1933 short HELLO POP will be at Film Forum on Sunday September 29th (matinee) and two shows on Monday September 30th. This will be part of my program of other rarities including a just struck 35mm print of Robert Benchley's YOUR TECHNOCRACY AND MINE, Technicolor rarities from James Layton of George Eastman House, GOBS OF FUN ('33) a George Givot Vitaphone with a previously unknown Shemp appearance (thanks Jenny Paxson !), a promised Library of Congressjust-restored early talkie short gem TBA, and a reprise of my nominee for funniest Vitaphone short: CONLIN AND GLASS IN 'SHARPS AND FLATS' ('28).

IMPORTANT: You CANNOT order tickets until later in August as it is too long til the shows. When posted you can order online at www.filmforum.org I suggest that route and not showing up show day at the boxoffice. West coast venues are being developed.

Beaten to it! Oh well...that's the news I'd been waiting to announce since early June, but had been sworn to secrecy! :-X

I hope to see all our Stooge friends at the shows...I expect to be at both, as I usually am with Vitaphone & other rare film shows at The Film Forum. Let's have a big delegation of Stooges fans turn out to support the preservation and re-premiere of HELLO POP and these other rarities!

I overlooked your post, but I guess it's something. I live closer to the Bay Area, so it'd be nice if it was up here.

I was hoping Rich would have some insight in to the screening venues.

All I've heard about so far are the two screenings mentioned above. But it's quite possible there could also be a screening at one of the UCLA Film Preservation Festivals and/or Cinecon some time in the future.

I can see an airing on TCM in its future, but having gone to annual Stoogefests in my hometown growing up there's really nothing like seeing the boys on the big screen. I saw an original print of Nertsery Rhymes back in the late 90s at the same theater that held the yearly festivals and it was very memorable. With Hello, Pop! I can only imagine.

I'll do my damndest to head down to Glendale in November, then. Could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Those tickets won't likely go on sale until September at the earliest. For one thing, the full slate of films to be shown at this year’s fest has not been officially confirmed.

But it’s good to hear—locoby and Kopfy—that both of you are considering attending this year’s event. I have a feeling that once the HELLO POP! screening is officially announced, many people will be trekking in from far and wide to attend.

I have not been to NYC before so I checked into it and I'm making the trip to do a little sightseeing and see Hello Pop on the 29th. While I know it will eventually play cable and be on DVD, this is a once in a lifetime chance to see a (re) premiere of a Three Stooges film. I'm really looking forward to it.

Unless this has been mentioned elsewhere, does anyone know when approximately this film was last publicly screened? Was it in 1933 or did MGM ever re-release the Ted Healy and His Stooges shorts after they became popular at Columbia. If a print was still around in the late 60s, I've often wondered if it got any exposure in that 30 plus years since the initial release.

I've never been to New York either, nor have I ever seen the Stooges on the big screen.

I'd give my eye teeth to come for this - especially, as you said, for the first screening in (possibly) 80 years.

No, MGM never reissued their Stooges shorts to try to cash in on the Stooges' success at Columbia. That's surprising, as it was often done by all the studios. Sometimes when a bit player became famous later a studio would reissue a film and even change the billing in the cast to make it appear the bit player was the star (several early Alan Ladd films were reissued that way after he finally became a star in 1942).
So, the last time HELLO POP was officially screened at a movie theater would have been in 1933. Five of the MGM Stooges shorts (those that were not lost, obviously) were theatrically released by MGM in 1983 as a Stooges Festival. But other than that, the MGM shorts were not officially theatrically reissued.

Wasn't this MGM Festival met with a fierce reaction from the crowd?

If I remember correctly, a book said that people were angry because there was 'too much Ted Healy and not enough Curly.'

Can anyone confirm this?

I attended several of the screenings when the films were shown in Boston at The Orson Welles Theater in 1983.
Unfortunately the screenings were Fridays and Saturdays at midnight, so sometimes it seemed a lot of rowdy folks came, who appeared to have just left drinking parties and wanted to see some funny Stooges films - the prime Curly stuff. So, yes there were some who didn't appreciate the different roles Moe, Larry and Curly played in these MGM shorts. I don't think back then, without websites and as many Stooges books as we have now, that most of them even knew who Ted Healy was. They just weren't used to someone else slapping Moe around, for one thing. And of course, a lot of folks didn't like the musical numbers that MGM inserted into these shorts.
I remember especially that ROAST BEEF AND MOVIES didn't go over very well at most of the screenings.

I'm looking forward to seeing some of you knuckleheads at the 'Hello Pop' screening at the Film Forum today. And don't forget to do your best Ted Healy imitation: "I'm the Boss, remember? I'm the Boss!"  [pie]

Just a little antidote anecdote: My lovely love Linda is horrified happy to be attending the screening with me. Last night, a skunk passed by Linda's house. I asked her what would you rather face, a skunk or seeing a long-lost Three Stooges film? She thought a moment and said, "Well, at least the skunk is cute!"

Sorry it took so long getting back about the screening, a lot of personal stuff has been going on this week. 'Hello Pop' was a fun short, the Stooges were funny, Healy was just a bossy and Bonnie, well, she was Bonnie. The Stooges had scenes all to themselves and they shone in those scenes. When they were paired with Ted it was the typical "I'm the Boss" routine, though Ted was playing their father again. The MGM song and dance sequences were OK, of the times. It was great to be a part of history in viewing this short in it re-debut in 80 years. The print of the film looked very good, kudos to Ron Hutchinson for spearheading the restoration, and to the gentleman in Australia who found it amongst his collection. Good job all around. Hopefully it won't be long before the DVD comes out with perhaps the rest of the MGM Stooge shorts.

Additional note: In 'GOBS OF FUN' Shemp is only in the short for a few minutes, but he steals the scene completely from the main comedians. The other shorts that the audience enjoyed were 'Sharps and Flats' with the team of Jimmy Conlin and his wife Myrtle Glass and 'Short & Shaw'. The short with Conlin & Glass was a lot of fun with the team and the backstage crew obviously having a great time with their improvisational antics which was contagious with the theater audience who joined in on the cries of "Whoa!" from Conlin and crew. The vaudeville team of Short & Shaw and their bizzare but funny deadpan act was also a big audience favorite.

These shorts are viewable on YouTube, and here they are:

OldFred,

Almost forgot to ask - in what order would you rank the 5 MGM shorts now that you've seen them all?

I don't know if I'm qualified to give a rating, I've seen the shorts, but don't have that good a memory of 'The Big Idea', just remembered the Stooges kept coming into Healy's office and interrupting him by playing on their horns. I'll do what I can here:

Ratings: 1 to 5

NERTSERY RHYMES - The first of the MGM shorts with Ted Healy and the Stooges with Bonnie along for the ride. This one is pretty bizarre as the Stooges are playing Ted's 'sons', and they keep insisting that he tell them a bed time story. Bonnie is some weird fairy princess and doesn't really come across as annoying as in other shorts, just weird. This is the first of the shorts in color and the make-up on Ted and the Stooges is pretty heavy. Interesting for it's weirdness factor. Rating: 4

Beer and Pretzels - This one has a conventional plot and the Stooges come off as very funny while Ted not so much. Bonnie actually has a more solid character in this one. Some of the scenes come off as awkward, especially the one with the Stooges and Ted sitting at the table enjoying the floor show. It's like MGM didn't know what to do with them and just told them to sit and look like they're enjoying themselves. Historically, MGM DIDN'T know what to do with the Stooges, so they just stuck them there. The musical numbers are just ok. Rating: 4

Hello Pop - It was great to finally see this long lost MGM Stooge short. The Stooges again play Healy's 'sons' and have whole scenes without Ted and Bonnie and they shone in those scenes. Ted was actually pretty funny during his scenes. Bonnie kept interrupting Ted and the payoff was kind of limp. The short was in two-strip Technicolor and they REALLY slathered on the make-up on Ted and the Boys, it's most noticeable on Moe. Again, the musical numbers were fine for what they are. Rating: 4 1/2

Plane Nuts - I like this one a lot as it presents a visual record of the Healy and Stooges stage act and gives us a rare glimpse of what their act was like live with Bonnie as part of the act. What I really enjoyed was that Larry had a lot to do in the sketch. This is probably my favorite of the MGM Stooge shorts because of if preservation of the Healy/Stooges stage act. Rating: 5

The Big Idea - Probably the weakest of the MGM Healy/Stooges shorts. It mostly features Ted with Stooges coming in at various times to serenade him on their horns. I've seen this short perhaps once, and while the Stooges were funny, it didn't have a lasting impression on me. Rating: 3

Now, if one of you mugs can do better, I dare ya to cross that line! --------------------------------- there, you see, now you're on my side! Nyuck Nyuck Nyuck! [pie]

I happened to stumble across this today:

http://talkieking.blogspot.com/2008/10/march-of-time-unfinished-mgm-1930.html

It's an article about the unreleased 1930 M-G-M musical The March Of Time. Apologies if this is old news to some of the more knowledgeable Stooge buffs, but if you scroll down the page, there are links to some video clips with footage from this film, one of which is part of a musical number called "The Lock Step" which the article says was reused in Jailbirds Of Paradise. Of course, this would be recycled footage from a non-Stooge-related feature film but it appears this was indeed part of the still "lost" short. My question is, where did this come from? I'm not gonna ask if there's more where this came from because I figure if there was, we would have heard about it by now, but still...

Here's a direct link to You Tube:

No, nothing yet as far as I know. I really hope we can see it eventually!

Me too!  I'm starting to believe that anything is possible as far as lost films and movies on DVD's goes.

I haven't heard anything about this in ages - is anything new happening?

When can we hope for a DVD release? (Sorry to make waves, I'm just REEEEALLY impatient! ;D)

Maybe they're waiting until they find "Jailbirds Of Paradise."

I was at the screening back in September and they said the plan at the time was to put them on DVD through the Warner Archive in Spring or Summer this year.

Sounds great!  Maybe we can get that and Volume 2 of the Vitaphone Comedies as well.

I'm sorry to keep bringing this up, but has there been any more news (screenings, DVD release?)

I fear I may be becoming obsessed (just look at my profile pic for gosh sakes!)

I agree, I keep wondering the same thing. I'm logging on here every day hoping I'll see something regarding a new DVD with the MGM shorts. One thing is for sure, I cannot begin to tell you how excited I will be to finally see this lost gem.

Please hurry and release it!

Yes, when is this getting released on DVD? This is getting ridiculous.

You may want to consider contacting them via their Facebook page. If someone posts a question to their wall, they are usually pretty good about answering it. And if the film/show in question is one with "elements" or "rights" issues, they usually will be upfront and mention it. They have someone who actually looks into this stuff and responds in a timely manner. Maybe you'd get a better answer than just by e-mailing them.

Just a thought.

Here's a reply:

"I thought at one point they said it would be included in a Stooges at MGM set they were going to release. It was mentioned long ago and we haven't heard anything since. Hopefully that set is still in the works :)"

Too bad we couldn't get a petition or something together so they'd get moving.

Sorry to keep throwing this into everyone's face, but here's a reply straight from Warner Archive themselves. It sounds like a Stooge short DVD set is in the works, it's just a question of how long will we have to wait.

I really hope they'll include 'Roast Beef And Movies' on there too, despite that there is only one Stooge instead of the usual three.

Anyway, here it is:

Warner Archive Collection commented on your post.

It's okay. I can wait. I just keep mumbling to myself, "I will not become obsessed - I will not become obsessed - I will not become obsessed"

I would hope "Roast Beef" is there too, but if not, I can live with that, since it and "Plane Nuts" were released as extras with "Dancing Lady." It would be awesome if "Jailbirds Of Paradise" could show up, but what are the odds? (I hope they're not waiting for that to happen before releasing the collection, unless they know something I don't know!)

When I opened this thread and read of this restoration and impending release I almost jumped out of my chair. But after reading the entire 1st page I saw that it was a year old.

So what's the 411 now?

NAAAATHING!

I really wish we could get them to hurry up somehow...too bad we couldn't start a petition or all write to them on their Facebook page and let them know how much we are all looking forward to this.

Otherwise, I might just die of old age before anything happens.  ;D

Had I known they were not going to release this, I would've crawled to the ends of the earth just to see it in the theater. But I didn't because I thought it was coming out on DVD. They shouldn't have said that they were going to release it on DVD if they weren't...

I thought this would've had a premiere on TCM by now.. I'd like to see it instead of, oh, the umpteenth airing of the heavily edited Johnny Carson interview with Jimmy Stewart. He liked to fly a plane to "nowhere", and his wife could drive faster than he could fly, yadda-yadda.

Not that I have a problem with the Carson stuff (I'd rather see the whole shows unedited!) or seeing "It Happened One Night" shown (what seems like) every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, but maybe TCM could rotate the stock a little?

Mini-rant, yes. But steeped in truth.

Guys, I'm sure it will be released eventually.  With the made to order DVR thing being pretty popular and the fact that The Three Stooges, to my knowledge, still sell, I'm sure they're waiting for the right moment to release some long lost film.  What Warners considers the right moment and what you or I might consider the right moment may vary.  They're releasing tons of little b films, I'm sure HELLO POP will find a similar release.

Unfortunately, this single short is as about as release-friendly as the Disney/Dali oddity "Destino". Reminds me of when WB was issuing their sporadically-produced new theatrical cartoons on VHS a few years back -- for each new cartoon, you hadda buy a tape with 6 LT/MMs that had already been released in a zillion orders and manners...

It would have to be issued with other films, no way you can justifiably package a 15 or 20 minute short as a stand alone.  Hopefully it will be in a good scenario instead of the WB scenario you mention where double dipping would be necessary,

Truthfully, I'd be happy if it just showed up on YouTube.  I'm not expecting a masterpiece, but more an interesting curio.

It's kind of the same thing with the Avatar sequels....we know they're coming, just a question of when.
