Interesting. I’ve always wanted to see something with Penner in it. In his autobiography, Mel Blanc credited Penner as being one of the first major comedians to really give him a chance on his radio show.

Just watched this and I actually really liked it. Lots of great physical gags in this like the ladder gag, the saw chasing Penner, and the ending where Dave and the brother-in-law fall. I especially liked the gag where Joe dropped the plates; that was a clever way to call back to the earlier gag with the saw and the table. Dave’s laughter tended to get annoying, but otherwise I actually thought this was a pretty solid comedy. I’d totally watch it again.

I would love for these to be released on another Vitaphone Comedy set from Warner Archive.

Yeah. There are two Vitaphone shorts in particular I’d really like to see: Bert Wheeler’s solo short, SMALL TIMERS, and Harry E. Lang’s short WHO’S WHO (which is allegedly the earliest filmed version of a “Who’s On First?” variation). I don’t know a ton about Vitaphone, but it seems like they had an impressive number of films and various performers.
