Topic: Disorder in the Court line

OK...I know this has come up here before, and someone asked me recently, and I didn't have an answer.  In Disorder in the Court, right after the "tarantula" line, Curly says something like "Vice side kid." 

Does anybody remember what he says?  I have searched the forum, but of course, nothing ever comes up.....

He says, "oh, vici kid".  That was a popular brand of soft leather used in making shoes and handbags back in the 1930s.

At first I thought Curly may have been dredging up a piece of a quote, like Shakespeare. Pericles Prince of Tyre contains "For vice repeated is like the wand'ring wind, Blows dust in others' eye, to spread itself;" etc.

But then, reading xraffle's post, I looked up "vici kid" and got adverts for shoes going back to 1900. Also found a link that provided a pronunciation of the word, and it is indeed "vice-eye". The "kid" part is perhaps in reference to the type of leather used.

Based upon this, Curly must have been commenting on the look of the shot-up toupee, that it resembled shoe-leather.

Could kid just be a reference to being youthful.

Well...yeah.  I looked there first, but I still had no idea what it meant.  I figured somebody here would know right away.  I looked it up later on google!

Plus, "kid" is the name for a baby goat, from which fine leather goods are produced.  (And that's where the term "handle with kid gloves" comes from, BTW.)
