I believe the answer you're looking for is THE SHAKIEST GUN IN THE WEST (1967). But, Strother Martin was not in that movie.

Good one!  You beat me to it!

I don't know much about Struther Martin except for that film and Slap Shot, in which he was terribly funny!  Did he do much work in comedies?

He had a small role in a HUGELY sucessful movie..."You don't have any money going DOWN the moutain!" Was his best line.

I allways liked this game. Try this one: Ward Bond, Neville Brand and Cagney. This one is a tuffy! No fair looking this up! Small hint: not a Western.

Offline 3DStooge

This is a tough question Boidbrain! No wonder there hasn't been any attempt at an answer. The key is Neville Brand. I know he started in films around 1950 and I believe Ward Bond's last films were in the 1950's. It seems to me that there was a 1950 film with both James Cagney and Ward Bond, but I don't remember Neville in it. Well anyway, was it Kiss Tommorow Goodbye? [pie]

(A correct response for Boid Brain, because I looked it up)
A flick that was directed by the dude who directed the sequel to "Planet of the Apes" and starred ...

Alan Hale, Jr. (no 'lil buddy included)
Dennis Hopper (NOT Coopa)
Bruce Dern (NOT Middle Aged Crazy)
Mark Lenard (no ape mask OR pointed ears)

extra credit for naming the director, AND the star of the movie
(small hint ... it IS a western)
The tacks won't come out! Well, they went in ... maybe they're income tacks.

Alan Hale portrayed the town's blacksmith, Dennis Hopper played the weird prophet, Bruce Dern was the cattle thief and murderer, and Mark Lenard was the wily prosecuting lawyer.

Quite true ...
BTW Ted Post directed this movie, and also directed "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" and had to threaten to resign the job if Charlton Heston wouldn't appear in the movie. (Chuck said it was "like the Andy Hardy series", and initially refused to appear in anymore ape flicks)

Hint #2 -
A very well known actor and stage star also appeared in this movie in a supporting role  - a very persuasive ever-loving two-timing salesman.

The Last Starfighter.

Wild. The theme is very reminiscent of Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

... and to fill in the hints ...
Lance Guest is the lead actor (shares same last name with Christopher Guest - Spinal Tap / Princess Bride)
Robert Preston plays the supporting role of Centauri (emulating his role as The Music Man)
The movie was released in 1984 - after Tron and Star Wars, but did succeed in looking real enough onscreen while Tron had surrealistic feel
