Won an Academy Award for THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY? (1969). Many career opportunities were lost due to Gig's alcoholism... he was cast in BLAZING SADDLES (1975) but replaced by Gene Wilder after suffering the DTs his first day on the set; cast as the voice of 'Charlie' on CHARLIE'S ANGELS in 1976 but was too drunk to read his lines, and replaced by John Forsythe.
Married to Elizabeth Montgomery 1956 - 1963. Three weeks after marrying his fourth wife in 1978, he killed her and committed suicide with the same gun; there was no note, or explanation.
