Stage actress who moved into films during the late 1940s. Usually cast in comedic roles, particularly the elocution teacher in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN (1952). Her stocky frame and plain face usually led to "ugly duckling" type roles, such as 'General Burkhalter's' sister on HOGAN'S HEROES (1965 - 1971). A favorite of Jerry Lewis, he cast her in costarring roles for most of his solo feature films. Familiar to modern audiences as 'Sister Mary Stigmata' in THE BLUES BROTHERS (1980), and the voice of 'Peg Bundy's' mother on MARRIED WITH CHILDREN.
