A stage is ambushed and robbed by a white man leading a band of renegade Indians, and the passengers are killed, except for a young woman who is abducted. Eighteen months later, loner Chris Danning (Randolph Scott) learns that the woman, his fiancee, killed herself in the Indian camp. With a description of the white man, he scours the southwest until he arrives in Coroner Creek and finds him... wealthy rancher Younger Miles (George Macready). Miles, a greedy and abusive man who employs thugs like Ernie Combs (Forrest Tucker) for ranchhands, is married to the Sheriff's (Edgar Buchanan) daughter. A rival rancher, widow Della Harms, finds herself being squeezed out when her cattle are restricted from good grazing land due to Miles' schemes. Danning accepts Harm's offer of ranch foreman, a position he can use to fight against Miles and slowly earn his revenge.

Joe DeRita cameos in a few scenes, as the town's barkeep.
