MUSTY MUSKETEERS

The stooges are troubadors for the court of King Cole. They ask King Cole if they can marry their girfriends or not, and the King agrees, but only after his daughter is married in the spring to a prince. Mergatroyd, the Court's magician, does not like the sound of this and has his guards kidnap the princess, and the Stooges set out to rescue her.

A remake of FIDDLERS THREE (1948), using stock footage.

Stooge Goofs   (2)
  • Messy or Neat Hair?
In one of the reused scenes from FIDDLERS THREE, the Stooges burst out of the magic box and in the background, you can see that Mergatroyd's hair is messy. Then they cut to new footage with a brief close-up of Mergatroyd, and his hair is now neat. Then when it goes back to the reused footage, his hair is messy again.

  • Stunt double mishap
In the new footage of Old King Cole's court it's very easy to tell that it is not Virginia Hunter playing Princess Alicia. Her double has a completely different hair style and she hides her face with a fan that Princess Alicia in FIDDLERS THREE never uses.

MOETH to SHEMPETH: (As Moeth has a mean look on his face and is using a mad voice as he is now hitting Shempeth on his coconut with the hammer): "Thou art a 'Dumb-Cluck'!"

We now see Shempeth loosing his balance as he is now falling backwards on his backside on a pile of red hot horse shoes. He is now in the process of jumping up and down and running around in circles frantically as he is now sitting down in a barrel of water, sizzling, cooling himself off as he now has a look of glee on his face as he is saying, 'aaaaah; aaaaah; aaaaah; aaaaah'.

Moeth is now taking a giant-sized pair of shoeing pliers and is pulling Shempeth out of the barrel of water with them. {We now see the pattern of four horse shoes on Shempeth's backside of his trousers}.

Shempeth is now in the process of lifting his leg as a demonstration for Suzy and Moeth is thinking it's Suzys leg is now in the process of applying the shor. Shempeth now has a petrified look of pain on his face as he is now hopping around in circles and is screaming loudly in a panicking voice, 'Aaaah; aaaah; aaaah; aaaah; aaaah; ooooh; ooooh; ooooh; ooooh; ooooh; oooowh; oooowh; oooowh; oooowh; oooowh; hunha; hunha; hunha; hunha; hunha'!

MOETH to SHEMPETH: (As Moeth is saying to the hopping in pain Shempeth with a mad look on his face and a mad voice): "Idiot, thou hast made me shoe the wrong mule, hold still!"

MOETH to SHEMPETH: (As we now see Moeth removing the shoe from the frantically hopping in pain Shempeth as he is still jumping around on one foot in pain and has a painful look on his face as Moeth is shouting at him madly as he is now removing the shoe): "Hold still, hold still now!"

We now see Moeth with a really mad and determined look on his face as he is pulling hard the horse shoe nail from Shempeth's foot as poor Shempeth now once again has a really horrible look of pain on his face as he is jumping around in circles once again in pain yelling, 'oooowh; oooowh; oooowh; oooowh; oooowh; oooowh; oooowh; oooowh'!

SHEMPETH to MOETH: (As he is saying to Moeth in a mean voice as he is now slapping Moeth's hand): "Yes!"

We now once again see Moeth taking his shoeing pliers and is hitting Shempeth hard on the top of his coconut with them. Shempeth is now falling to the floor on one knee as he has a a really painful look on his face and is once again shouting profuciously in a state of pain, 'oooowh; oooowh; oooowh; oooowh; oooowh; yump; yump; yump; yump; yump; yoooowh; yoooowh; yoooowh; yoooowh; yoooowh; as he is now holding his sore foot and head and is now rubbing them from excruciationg pain.

Larryeth is now petting Sue as Moeth is now bending over and is trying to pick-up one of Sue's feet to apply a horse shoe to it. We now hear Sueth braying loudly in a state of protest.

MOETH to SHEMPETH: (As Moeth is now looking at him with a perplexed look on his face as he is saying to him in a determined voice): "Leteth a man show you how to shoe Sue!"

We now see Larryeth kindly petting Suzy's head to keep her calmed down as Moeth is now trying to put a shoe on Sue as Sue is now in protest slapping Moeth thrice in his face with her tail.

As Moeth was in the process of being slapped in the face by Suzy's tail is now looking at her tail in a horribly mean way and is saying in total disgust, 'hemph; hemph; hemph; hemph; hemph; hemph; hemph; hemph'. Moeth has now been slapped hard thrice more by Sue's tail in utter protest about not wanting to be shoed.

MOETH to SUETH: (As he is now living up to one of his own insults and to me it is 'EMPTY-SKULL' as he is now in a state of sheer madness as he is now saying to Sue as he has now tied a hammer to her tail): "I will fix thee, wise-guy! This hammer will hold thy tail down, yes sir, Smarty-Cat, now giveth me thy foot, giveth me!"

One of the better Shemp recycles--the always lovely Diana Darrin is a welcome sight in any stooge short she appears in & the sword-fighting scene at the end is pretty good. Not better than Fiddlers Three, but overall, a pretty decent remake.

A great remake and this improves upon FIDDLERS THREE by cutting out some weak and bizarre scenes like the nursery rhymes sequence, the Daily Laugh sequence, and the fiddling scenes, redoing some lines from the original at a more faster pace (like the "Sue has not a shoe" bit), and adding in an exciting and hilarious new sword fighting sequence. One of the few remakes better than the original.

Since I hadn't seen this one or "Fiddlers Three" in a while, I decided to watch both of them again and compare them. I found that this one pales in comparison to the original even if it has a very funny sword fight scene at the end. The rest was either old footage or new footage that almost copied the old footage. 1 1/2 pokes

I thought this remake was quite good, since they took out all of the fiddling scenes, and I never though highly of that scene. Plus, the swordfight at the end was quite funny.Grade: B

Musty Musketeers is basically Fiddler's Three after a month of Weight Watchers. It's the same short, yet not quite as fatty. Musty Musketeers does not have much new footage. However, Jules White did an excellent job of editing out that God awful nursery rhymes scene and adding in a Stooge romance scene and a sword fight. Despite the lack of original footage, Musty Musketeers is the better short due to to the deletion of the nursery rhymes scene and better footage being added in its place. If at first you don't suck seed, keep on sucking until you do suck seed.

This is one Jack White-penned remake that works out well. I remember seeing this film before FIDDLER'S 3, and I must say that this is funny. The beginning and end in new footage is funny, and Vernon Dent is funnier in this version.Memorable Scene: The climactic sword fightRating: 3 1/2 starsBeatleMoe
