The myth of Michael Jordan

Let me preface this by saying I am a Bulls fan...but I have good reason to disclaim the greatness of MJ. Valid reasons I believe.

Are ya drunk again Boid? :p

Perhaps you can elaborate, say by giving your "valid" reasons as to why the best player in NBA history was overrated? I'm a Celtics fan, and as much I would love to say a Larry Bird or Bill Russell or John Havlicek was better I can't deny the truth.

No, I'm not drunk,,,here is the
 thing...MJ went
to the hole like nobody else...for about 6 years....but he was a gun...he scored 30 every nite, but he took 60 shots to get there. Pippin  is the MAN!

Well since you brought up Scottie Pippen, let's compare the stats (career):

Jordan FG%: .497, Pippen FG%: .473
Jordan PPG: 30.1, Pippen PPG: 16.1
Jordan APG: 5.6, Pippen APG: 5.2
Jordan RPG: 6.2, Pippen RPG: 6.4
Jordan MPG: 38.3, Pippen MPG: 34.9

Pippen has a slight advantage in rebounds, but Jordan has him in field goal percentage, points, assists and minutes. You are probably the first person I've come across who believes Pippen was better than Jordan.

A lot like Lennon & McCartney they were a team, much better together than apart. Jordon was the Lennon of the team. ( The better half )

It's the civil war that I don't like... But Jordan is overrated. He was the worst fucking ball hog the game has ever seen and the Bulls didn't win shit until Phil got him to start playing team ball.

His teamates, to a man hated his guts. Even Horace Grant, a gentle soul, threatened to kick his ass....once, in practice little Steve Kerr fouled Jordan and Mike punched him in the face. How do you think that went over with his teamates?

As far a Pippin goes, he and Mike always guarded each other in practice and it was a wash. And as you know, Jordan never won a ring w/out Scotty, and vi ca verca. If I was to chose a team, I would take about 10 guys before Mike....West, Oscar, Bill, Wilt, Barkley, Lew, Petit, Magic, Clyde and a couple more whose names don't come to mind.

On a personal note, I know for a fact that he is a scumbag. He came to gamble at my Casino once when I was working. I talked to the Pit Boss at lunch and he recounted this story: Jordan was playing Blackjack in a roped off erea, betting big bucks. He played for about 6 hours. The dealers were exited because huge bettors are rare in Tunica MS Casino's.

They quickly lost their excitement when they realized that he was a stone stiff, not tipping a red cent to any dealer, even if they put him on a heater. Finally, said Pit Boss asked him why he didn't tip. "It's tip enough for them to just deal to me"

I did not say he was better, I said he was the man. By the way, you missed a few stats, like turn-overs and steals. How come?

Edit: BTW....as effective as MJ/SP were, I would take Byrd/McCale over them. Who would you take?

Maybe we could take a hint from the baseball thread & subtitle this thread "For Those of Us Who Care".

For me, the only thing duller than actually watching an NBA game is having to endure boring conversations about retired (or even current) players.

Is it just me or is there anyone else who dislikes professional basketball?

I tend to dislike all professional sports and find discussions of them boring, which is why I rarely post to the threads on the subject.  It doesn't bother me if others want to discuss them though.   ;)

Oh I'm sorry, I'll ask the guy behind you to stop holding the gun at the back of your head so you don't have to read this thread.

I do too, but you seem to be the only one complaining. I simply choose not to get involved in the discussion. Simple as that!

I dunno X, I think we should all take a page from Dog's playbook and post in threads that don't interest us telling the people who are interested who we think the subject is boring/stupid. After all, I'm sure the people who post on the "name that classic line" thread are on needles and pins waiting for me to post over there telling them how I don't like it when fans quote the Stooges because it takes the funny out of the line.

I thought I would not disrupt the discussion with my two cents and just leave them alone, but perhaps I should rethink that and act like a dick instead.

Sorry, guys. I was just voicing my opinion, but I really didn't intend to piss anyone off. One of these days, I'm gonna have to learn to keep my big mouth shut.

It's alright and I don't mind you expressing your opinion. In this case it's like a "pissing in the punch bowl" scenario: I'm not going to have any punch so I'm going to piss in the punch bowl and ruin it for everybody else.

I understand that on a Three Stooges message board that there are going to be people who don't like sports and will roll their eyes when they see topics about sports come up. With that said I don't see the point in interrupting the sports threads with "who cares about (insert sports here)?". There are people who obviously do care otherwise these threads would die a quick death.

Sorry, I totally forgot with the interruption.

That's really tough. I mean if you asked me which trio I would pick: Jordan, Pippen, Grant or Bird, McHale, Parrish I would definitely go with the Celtics (I don't think there has ever been a better threesome than Bird, McHale & Parrish). But damn, that's a tough one.

I guess I'll let my bias fandom shine through and take Bird and McHale. In a perfect world I would take one of each: Bird and Jordan.

Holy shit! McHale was a fucking low post freak! Jordan was a gun...you take him! I have never been abled to access Byrd...I remember watching games when he scored 15, and games when he scored 30 with 15 assists. Isaih Thompson said that he was just a decent player, and that if he was a black man he would be of no notice.

You are from Boston...what do you think?

Zeke is a fucking idiot: great basketball player but an idiot. If he were such a great mind the Knicks would not have sucked monkey anus when he was running them. Larry Bird is one of the all-time greats and I'm not saying that because I am a Boston fan. It doesn't matter what color his skin is. I'm guessing Zeke still held resentment from some Larry Legend trash talking (Bird was notorious for it on the court).

FYI- I happened to just be curious about the thread when I saw "Michael Jordan" in the title. As long as I don't do what Dog did and bash the topic, I think I'm entitled to read whatever thread I want. Whether I find the topic "interesting" or not, I can read a thread out of curiosity. Sorry if that annoys you.

I can think of another pretty good trio from that era: Worthy, Magic and Jabbar. God I hated those fuckers! Like McKale, Worthy was deadly in the post. Those two and Barkley are way underated nowadays.

P.S: That time when Jordan came to the casino, Sir Charles was with him. But he did not sit next to Mike at any time. He was playing the 5$ slots. He was up about 100K at one point but ended up losing about 400K (according to the slot attendant) Even 'tho he lost his ass he was still friendly and generous to the help. The poler opposite of Mr. Mike.

I just saw a funny but appropriate quote from Bobby Knight that I thought was tailor made for this thread:

 :D

"If the NBA were on channel 5 and a bunch of frogs making love was on channel 4, I'd watch the frogs even if they were coming in fuzzy."

I'm a Celtics fan too, and Larry Bird was one of the best.  As well as Kevin McHale (on an episode of Cheers) and Bill Russell.  But for all time, I'd have to say that is, in fact, Michael Jordan himself.  MJ, Magic, and Walton are among the greats.

And, for the record, I'm a girl and I eat, breathe, and sleep pro sports.  And all San Diego State University Aztecs athletic programs, even though I can't go to the football games because of the fucking fireworks and the fucking basketball tickets always sell out.
