Television and comic book writer Eric Freiwald died January 29, 2010 in Prescott AZ...
Variety obitNewsFromMEWith partner
Robert Schaefer (d. 2007), Freiwald wrote for top-rated 1950s and 1960s television series, including THE LONE RANGER, THE GENE AUTRY SHOW, MAVERICK, ZORRO, 77 SUNSET STRIP and THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES. Eric Freiwald wrote for 13 seasons of LASSIE.
From 1957 - 1965, Freiwald and Schaefer scripted for Western Publishing's comic books, specializing in adaptations of TV series they worked on; they also contributed to Western's line of licensed Disney titles.
While researching my
Three Stooges Journal article about Western's Three Stooges comic books, Rich Morrissey (d. 2001) told me that Freiwald and Schaefer were among the Stooges' comic book writers. Unfortunately, records do not exist as to who wrote what. But reports are, Eric and Bob were prolific.
The 1957 - 1965 timeframe assigns their credits to stories appearing in Dell & Gold Key issues of Comic Album, Four Color Comics and The Three Stooges.
Schaefer retired in 1984. Freiwald wrote for CBS' soap THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS during the past 30 years.
