Very Rare Three Stooges Film to Be Shown at Capitolfest Film FestivalBy Rich Finegan A rare Columbia SCREEN SNAPSHOTS short (Series 14 #6, released February 22, 1935) featuring The Three Stooges will be shown on Sunday, August 13, 2006 as part of the fourth annual Capitolfest Film Festival in Rome, New York.Film synopsis, cast & crew details...http://threestooges.net/episode.php?id=214The Capitolfest is a great weekend series of rare films shown in 35mm at the historic movie palace, The Capitol Theater, built in 1928. The SCREEN SNAPSHOTS short is very rare, and this will be its first public screening since its initial release in 1935. This short is essential viewing for Three Stooges fans, as they perform a routine in this film that they never did again in any other film. The Three Stooges Journal subscribers can check out issue #111 Fall 2004 for a detailed review, http://threestooges.net/journal.php?action=view&id=111. For music lovers this short also features a rare appearance by the wonderful Boswell Sisters as well as Jimmy Durante and Rose Marie contributing some of their vocal specialties. Stooges fans - don't miss this rare opportunity to see one of the most enjoyable SCREEN SNAPSHOTS shorts and rarest Three Stooges appearances. Also included in the Capitolfest program is another vary rare Columbia short, the first of the "Musical Novelties" series (of which The Stooges' WOMAN HATERS was the fifth). The short is entitled UMPA, and besides being one of the wackiest yet most charming excursions into silliness you're ever likely to see, it is the source of the familiar song My Life, My Love, My All sung by The Stooges and Marjorie White in WOMAN HATERS. By the fifth entry in the series, Columbia had decided to save on costs by recycling the music tracks to the first four shorts and adding new lyrics. So, much of the score of WOMAN HATERS was borrowed from UMPA, including the song which was originally called At Last. This short is great fun and a revelation to Stooges fans, especially those of us who count WOMAN HATERS as a favorite. Other Capitolfest highlights include a very rare 1927 Paramount promotional short featuring an undocumented appearance by W.C. Fields. You won't read about this one in any of the books on W.C. The Max Davidson shorts series produced by Hal Roach in the late 1920's included some of the funniest comedies ever made, and Friday night's show features one example. Capitolfest will also be celebrating the 100th birthday of comedienne Thelma Todd (1906-1935) with screenings of several of her films, again including several real rarities, such as a promotional short made to announce the signing of comic Harry Langdon to Hal Roach Studios in 1929. Also featured will be several newly restored, and some old favorite Vitaphone shorts (including Bert Lahr's very first film, from 1929!)The silent films will be accompanied by some of the best in the business, such as Phil Carli, on The Capitol's original 1928 Moller Theater Organ. Three Stooges fans, W.C. Fields fans, Thelma Todd fans, and all vintage film fans don't miss this weekend of rarities! It is very affordable and a great opportunity to leave the real world behind for a weekend and hang out with classic film fans.
