These "independent" guys seem to know what they're doing with handling releases more than the corporate stuffed shirts at Sony! Classic Flix is leaving shorts out because they are lost; Sony is leaving things out because they can. Only their brains are lost.

Amen

It looks like this is coming out January and I pre ordered mine.  Looking forward to this - Our Gang is easily my silent Hal Roach blind spot and I can’t wait to see more.

I’ve been slow reading this too - a horrible bout of insomnia I’m learning to manage thanks to some YouTube channels.  Slowly getting back to normal.  But anyway, I’m about 100 pages in and am at the beginnings of Shemp at Vitaphone.  Yes, indeed it fascinating reading how Shemp was the main guy behind Healy as far as their part of the act is concerned - meaning Healy had a big cast behind him besides Stooges.  The fact Moe wasn’t even there when Larry came on board and was out of the act for years is a revelation for me.  There seem to be several newspaper articles backing this up and it is indeed interesting to read the press Shemp got.

I haven’t gotten very far into SHEMP!, but I’m finding it a fascinating read so far.

Looks like a lot of “established lore” has gotten debunked, and the author is laying a lot of blame at Moe’s feet for this.

(Part of me wonders if, after Joan Howard Maurer’s death a few years ago, other family members are finally feeling freer to discuss things that don’t quite mesh with what we previously thought we knew?)

Roach did that stupid "dance" shortly before he died on Leno, too.

Any interview with Roach seems like a rehash of others he did. I never believe what comes out of his mouth knowing that he lied about BIG BUSINESS.

There are 3 sides to every story, but I generally take Stan's side and have never been a big fan of Hal Roach "the person."

That interview is over 40 years old, so if Letterman at that time didn't know much about classic comedy that would be weird.

Those types of interviews are always so light-weight. I would have asked Roach things like, "Tell me more about ur fights with Stan on BABES IN TOYLAND" and "SWISS MISS." But then the audience would have been puzzled.

He certainly got a lot of mileage out of that false story about BIG BUSINESS.
That wrong house bit did seem a bit of a stretch.

Dave is a connoisseur of old movies, but I suspect his knowledge of comedy silents/early talkies may be comparatively limited. He just didn't seem completely comfortable with HR, and never got into 'Dave' mode.

I also wonder if Roach (or his people) wrote the intro. I highly doubt a show staffer would have listed L&H after Lloyd and Will Rogers.

Regardless, I enjoyed watching this as I missed it when it originally aired. Either I had an exam the next day, or it was 1/2 price beer night.  :o

The fact that 20 years later they made a documentary about it proves what an epic fail it was. Sorry, Joe. It totally erased 1978 in my mind.

What a season 1978 was, though. And other than 2 (that I know of) highlights of the season shows, THE GREATEST COMEBACK EVER, and IT DON'T COME EASY, no other docs were made about it. And those 2 weren't really docs -- they were both made right after the 1978 season, and the latter one used to be shown a lot during Yankee rain delays. I remember renting the VHS tape of THE GREATEST COMEBACK EVER a few years later. They were both basically clips of of the season. I don't think there were any interviews made especially for it -- just interviews that had been made during the season for other purposes.

I'm probably preaching to the choir here -- but as a fan, the worst losses are the ones where you really think you have it wrapped up. The Red Sox in 1978 for the division win, and the Yankees in that dreadful 2004 ALCS.

They're kinda redundant -- they both start with the same Steinbrenner intro! One is narrated by Phil Rizzuto, the other by Bill White (partners on Yankee broadcasts on WPIX back then.)

Perhaps they were produced for different distibution? Like I said, one was only available to rent on VHS, the other was shown a lot on TV.
