Three dozen years ago this month, the following announcements of Larry Fine's death were heard on the evening news. The first was by Walter Cronkite; the second Howard K. Smith. My mom gave me the news the second I returned home from school that day, so I set up my dad's reel-to-reel tape deck and recorded what the television newscasters had to say. Sadly, neither Cronkite nor Smith provided the details I wanted to hear, nor seemed to care an iota about the subject. But in the oft-repeated words of Walter Cronkite, "That's the way it is!"
