GOOF ON THE ROOF is one of my few complaints about the DVD set - and this is coming from somebody who is not a techie kind of guy about these releases. The fact even that wasn’t fixed makes this more of a pass.
GOOF ON THE ROOF is interesting. iMDB lists the aspect ratio for the film as 1:85, which if true, makes the widescreen version correct. GOOF was filmed in late 1952, but not released until late 1953.
Film historian Stuart Galbraith once wrote:
"Though definitely released in Vitascope, Columbia’s 1.85:1 cropped widescreen process, this short’s super-tight compositions suggest it may have been shot for 1.37:1 and filmed in late-1952 or early-’53, long before its December 1953 release."
GOOF is the one widescreen short that doesn't look good that way but the timeline of its production and release is interesting.
If Sony is putting out something as it was released, I guess we can't fault them too much, though the short might have been shot for a different format in the first place.
