A great, lesser-seen version of the Stand In sketch, this one from the Ed Sullivan Show in 1961. The version from the Steve Allen Show a couple of years prior has turned up on budget DVDs over the years.

It was nice to see a live performance of The Three Stooges on Ed Sullivan, I am a fan of early variety and sketch shows. However, I think this skit would have fit Abbott and Costello more. The way Moe is ordering Curly Joe to take all of the abuse on camera seems like something Bud would do to Lou. I see there are also more appearances on Ed Sullivan, Ed Wynn and Steve Allen online (on the other hand, I feel like some of the second season of the Abbott and Costello show is them doing Three Stooges-style humor).

It’s nice to see these older shows starting to make these episodes more easily available (Dick Cavett has been doing this with his interviews too). Now, if only we could get Shemp’s version of the Maharajah skit...
