Top five favorite Stooge ladies

Since the ladies seem to come up in the weekly discussion, let's start a thread with our top five favorites. Now, this does not have to be a beauty contest, go with whatever criteria you want. Here are my top five favorites.

5. Eva McKenzie http://www.threestooges.net/cast/actor/307

Strictly for her role in OILY TO BED, OILY TO RISE. She played the dream mother-in-law: a sweet little lady who sees the good in the world. She does not care that you're not six feet tall, make less than six figures, have 4,500 posts on a Three Stooges message board, or what your politics are. She just wants to make you dumplings, apple pie, and for you to have one of her lovely daughters. She's alright by me.

4. Barbara Slater http://www.threestooges.net/cast/actor/343

Well, she was drop dead gorgeous. She appeared with Chaplin, and from what I can see, she can act as well. Nothing to complain about.

3. Jean Willes http://www.threestooges.net/cast/actor/389

Again, another gorgeous woman. Reminds me of Ava Gardner. She could go toe to toe with the boys, and she's best in GYPPED IN THE PENTHOUSE.

2. Symona Boniface http://www.threestooges.net/cast/actor/135

As great as the three above are and some of the others some of you might mention, the top two nobody comes close to. Symona Boniface is the perfect high society female Stooge foil, and she could be very funny when she wants to be. As much as I love Margaret Dumont, I shall speak what is probably comic blasphemy to some and say I love Symona more. If there's a Heaven, I hope to meet her, kiss her hand, and then have Moe launch a couple of pies in our faces.

The complete package. Beautiful and talented. She can sing, she can be funny, she can be evil, she can be a damsel in distress, she can be flirtatious, and she is number one on this list. Oh, and she had the decency to make a ton of shorts and stick around for ten years.

Here is my list ...

5) Marjorie White (Woman Haters)
I list her just because her career was cut short soon after making Woman Haters due to an automobile accident

4) Frances McCoy (Soup to Nuts)
She is number four for her rough New York style in this flick

3) Jeanie Roberts (Men in Black)
She does a wonderful job of playing the bubble-headed female

2) Dee Green (Brideless Groom, and the beloved Baggie)
She is a gorgeous lady that plays the ugly girl really, really well

1) Daphne Pollard (His First Flame)
She is a wonderful actress who can be just as physical a slapstick comedian as our boys are

I'm completely unfamiliar with Miss Pollard, and the still of her with Shemp is no help. I have never seen him so young. Details please!

1. Christine McIntyre. (And she was a villainess in her first three appearances!)

B. Symona Boniface. (She would have fit in quite well in "Hoi Polloi.")

Third. Dee Green. (A prime example of someone wanting a friend to meet a girl "with good personality" -- while not mentioning looks.)

Next. Jean Willes. (A change of hairstyle and hair color brought in a change of addytood -- also in her McHale's Navy appearances.)

Last. Dorothy Appleby. (I was always waiting for someone to slap her, but at least Vernon Dent got her with a pie.)

You have good taste in women. Definitely like three and four as well.

Oh, and Connie Cezan was mentioned as well. Both her and Lorna Gray (who I'm shocked no one has mentioned yet), came very close to making my list. Both ladies fell into the talented and beautiful category like Christine, but neither stuck around long enough to show their diversity, and I'm not sure either could quite sing like Christine either.

My list has a lot in common with Metaldams's:

5. Barbara Slater, for being supremely gorgeous and elegant and having a quite seductive voice in addition.

4. Phyllis Crane, for being simultaneously pretty and funny-looking, and for being a great sport as un upside-down ballerina (Pop Goes the Easel) and as Moe's dancing partner (Hoi Polloi).

3. Jean Willes, mainly on the strength of her performance in Gypped in the Penthouse, but to a large extent just for looking like that—strikingly attractive, but also a mean girl.

2. Symona Boniface, for being so damned good at what she did and for having the most pie-worthy face of any lady in the Stooge shorts.

1. Christine McIntyre, for all the obvious reasons.

I also want to put in a special good word for one of my favorite bit-part actors in the Stooge shorts: the tall, matronly woman who tries to stop the Stooges' pie-throwing rampage in ~~Hoi Polloi~~ [correction: Half Wits Holiday] by saying: "Stop this this instant, you disgraceful vagabonds!" and then, after Moe and Larry respond by hitting her in the face with pies, says (and this, to me, is her claim to immortality), "So! You want to play rough, do you? We-e-e-ell!" as she goes for the pies herself. ~~I don't find her among the women in the cast list.~~ [Corrected: BeAStooge informs me (#21 below) that she is Helen Dickson.]

The scene you describe is from HALF-WITS HOLIDAY (1947), and the actress is Helen Dickson.

I love me some Suzanne Kaaren! Gorgeous girl, love the dance scene she does, and she appears with Bela Lugosi in one of my all time favorite Z films, THE DEVIL BAT. You can call me a fan.
