This was taken shortly after the bomb went off in his hands that caused him to lose several fingers and temporarily his vision.  This was before he made all his classic features that involved all those crazy stunts, so he's an inspiration.

Very nice. He looks like a young Dr. Strangelove in that shot, down to the crazy right arm.
