That's the question I put forth. I suggest the criteria to be:

1) Both have to be human beings. (that eliminates Wray and Kong)
2) Appeared in more than one film together. (Yes, Gable/Colbert Qualify)
3) Box office success/awards. (choreography and technical awards excluded)
4) Social impact. (pretty much excludes Cruise and Kidman)

I have a definite choice in mind but I'd like to hear yours and of course, your reasons.

They were wonderful for lovers of lighthearted song and dance, to be sure, and were re-teamed many times. Extremely iconic. A serious contender.   ;)

Here's another couple with Marilyn Monroe.  Bogey not exactly gazing into his wife's eyes.

...and as far as influence in Hollywood, you're not going top these two, though I'm not sure if they ever paired in a film together.  Still, they helped invent this company called United Artists.

...and finally, another contender.  I've always had a crush on Myrna Loy.

Yes "Pickfair" were heavy hitters alright. But I'm afraid that they are trumped by the thin couple. They appeared in the most films together (9 I think). It was hard for me to not choose them, but my choice appealed to children as well as adults, pretty much doubling the audience.

Also, their characters are still household names today. You can't even say that  about Tracy/Hepburn.

Thank's BaStooge for the help on pics.

This may be the biggest money making couple in movie history, even with adjusted dollars.

Forget about rule number one for a minute.

Not widely known was this couple that teamed up for 6 or 7 films.
