Sony will also release Charlie Chase Shorts: Volume 1 as an MOD DVD-R title on 1/1. Included will be Man Bites Lovebug, The Mind Needer, The Chump Takes a Bump, Rattling Romeo, Skinny the Moocher, The Awful Goof, The Heckler, South of the Boudoir and A Nag in the Bag.

These are not just the Columbia shorts that Charley starred in.  A NAG IN THE BAG (1938) is a Smith & Dale, directed by Chase.

I'm glad Sony finally did this. I have 15 of the 20 Chase shorts in 16mm format. I can throw those away knowing they'll be released. Maybe volume 2 will have the other Smith and Dale short MUTINY ON THE BODY, which was later remade with the Stooges as MONKEY BUSINESSMEN, which I also own a 16mm print of.

Offline fearlessfrizzletop

If you're throwing away 15 Charley Chase titles on 16mm, toss 'em my way! ;)

Offline Kyle2012

Quality's not too great on them. They're all on DVD-Rs. If you want them, privately contact me.

Offline archiezappa

Yes!  More Columbia short subjects!  Wouldn't it be great if they released all of Columbia's short subjects?

Offline Kyle2012

Yes. Then I can get rid of the 16mm prints (on DVD, of course) I have of them. It may take them a while to release all of them, however, particularly Andy Clyde, in which he made 79 shorts, an output a close second to the Three Stooges series (190 shorts).

How is 79 close to 190? It's not even half.

Maybe the following is what Kyle2012 meant -

Andy Clyde had the longest running series in the history of short-subjects. His Columbia output alone ran second only to the films of The Three Stooges. A veteran of the Mack Sennett Studios, Andy was a trained professional at the art of slapstick comedy.

During his years at Educational, he developed the character of a bifocal wearing old man, which he carried over to Columbia. He stayed with the studio until 1956, and his comedies are amongst the most enjoyable made.

That's what I meant. I don't know how Sony is going to release his shorts if he made 79 of them. Maybe do how they released the Stooges shorts.

Posted today at The Digital Bits...

These are not just the Columbia shorts that Charley starred in.  A NAG IN THE BAG (1938) is a Smith & Dale, directed by Chase.

I find it odd that Volume 1 has only 8 of Charley Chase's shorts (plus A Nag In The Bag).
That means Volume 2 will have to include the remaining 12 of Chase's 20 shorts for Columbia.

The following is what someone wrote on Amazon.com -

Not only is this not really a review, but at the time that I type this, the DVD has not even been released yet. It is just that Amazon has not provided a listing of the contents on this collection. I hope this is useful.

Rattling Romeo (1939) - Directed by Del Lord - Cast: Charley Chase, Ann Doran, John Tyrrell, Ben Taggart, Richard Fiske, Harry Bernard, Brian O'Hara, Bud Jamison, Eva McKenzie, Chuck Callahan, Cy Schindell and Stanley Brown.

Did anybody pick this up yet?  If so, how is the print quality and general quality of the shorts?  Just ordered my copy last night (along with the Shemp/Arbuckle set) and am looking forward to both!

Excellent.

Trivia note... the 9th short, A NAG IN THE BAG (1938), is a Smith & Dale directed by Chase.  However, close watching will reveal that Charley does indeed "appear" too.
