It is with great sadness that I say Jon Lord of Deep Purple died today.  That heavy Hammond organ sound was a huge part of Purple's sound, and while everybody praises the guitar riff to "Smoke on the Water" to the heavens, it doesn't reach it's maximum heaviness until Lord's organ doubles it.  The man also composed CONCERTO FOR GROUP AND ORCHESTRA, one of the earlier marriages of rock and classical music in addition to being Whitesnake's keyboardist in their pre-MTV/pre-Tawny days.  Most recently, he did the WhoCares charitable single with Tony Iommi, Ian Gillan, Nicko McBrain, and Jason Newsted.  R.I.P. Jon, truly one of the great talents in hard rock and early metal, and I don't give that praise lightly.  The tributes are coming in left and right on the rock and metal web sites and I'm sure will continue over the next few days.
