Actor George Lindsey died May 6 in Nashville TN; he was 83.  George suffered health problems from  the effects of a burst appendix earlier in 2011, but after rebounding the past year, he suffered a serious stroke about a month ago.

Although typecast after playing 'Goober Pyle' for 8 years (1964 - 1971) on THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW and MAYBERRY RFD, George was an accomplished actor with dramatic turns on shows like THE TWILIGHT ZONE, GUNSMOKE, ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS, VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA and more.  Although 'Goober' became a career-block, George certainly had no regrets about allowing the character to make him a wealthy man.  He supported and funded Special Olympics, philanthropic arts programs, and for many years sponsored a nationally-renowned film festival competition for student filmmakers at his University of North Alabama alma mater.  The university dedicated a new campus theater in his honor in March 2012.

Obituary issued by the Lindsey family / Statement from Andy Griffith

Rest in Peace.

I'm only 20, but I grew up watching George as Goober.  Rest in Peace, George.  He's up there smiling down on us with Don Knotts and God now. :(
IT'S ALIVE!!!!

Man, you sure know your stuff. Thanks for finding all that out. I can't believe Jim Nabors is still alive. Good to see so many are still alive.

As with the stooges i grew up with the dukes(Not literally, lol). I couldn't get enough of them when i was a kid. When they showed two episodes in a row while on vacation, i almost shit my pants. I think at one time i had a plastic General Lee car.

Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man

Correct.

Arthur Franz played Tommy Nelson, and James Best was his stand-in for some of the special effects and staging.

The only time you "see" Jimmy in the movie itself is the climatic sequence in the locker room.  But he's quite "visible" in a couple production stills.
