Shemp_Diesel, thanks for posting that Floyd song from THE FINAL CUT.  I really enjoyed it and have always wanted to hear that period of Pink Floyd.  My understanding is that's Floyd's "Roger Waters solo album."

For a kind of sort of Pink Floyd connection, here's KISS doing their oddball career curveball in "A World Without Heroes."  Why a Pink Floyd connection?  This one's from 1981, and after his huge success with THE WALL, KISS thought they'd get producer Bob Ezrin (who previously worked with them on DESTROYER), to produce a concept album for them!  I'm a KISS fan and I like this, but let's just say this ain't your Daddy's KISS.  From the MUSIC FROM THE ELDER album, their worst selling all-time.

OK, I'll ease up on you non-metal lovers with less extreme and more traditional metal.

"Bark at the Moon" - Ozzy Osbourne - Ozzy camping it up Hammer style, great song.  For you 60's and 70's guys, yes, that's Carmine Appice on drums.

"Heading Out to the Highway" - I actually think this is a great POP song by a metal band.

"Phantom of the Opera" - ....'cause we need some Di'anno era Maiden too, progressive, fast, and awesome.

One of my fav. GNR songs ever.

"Patience" is one of the great ballads in all of rock, any era.

While we're on MTV, here's some of the better songs of the era.

Queensryche - "Eyes of a Stranger" - Ignore Geoff Tate's ridiculous hair, he's a great singer and this is a great song from the classic OPERATION: MINDCRIME album, maybe the best concept album of the 80's.

Megadeth - "In My Darkest Hour" - Gotta have some Dave Mustaine in there.  Hell of a guitar player and songwriter.

Dio - "All The Fools Sailed Away" - A very underrated Dio song.  This guy had a voice of gold, and he's one of the few metal legends I never got to see in concert, and alas, I never will.

Thanks for mentioning The Police. I had forgotten all about them. They were among my favorites & I had all their albums, mainly because of Andy Summers' unparalleled guitar work, not to mention Stewart Copeland's drumming. And I'm with you 100% on your other point. I can't stand any of Sting's solo stuff. Granted, he's an excellent bass player, but his songs & their arrangements, & his voice don't appeal to me at all.

I second the plaudits for Andy Summers and Steward Copeland.  The Police really kick-started my appreciation of music when I discovered them in high school (a few years after they broke up), and it was mostly from paying attention to what these two were playing.  Listening to Copeland was the first time I started paying attention to a song beyond just the basic tune and noticing the cool things a drummer can do.  The guy makes even 4/4 sound interesting.  And Summers is still one of my favorite guitarists.  His solo work has been a lot more interesting than Sting's, IMO (although unlike a lot of folks on here I enjoy a lot of what Sting's done post-Police - his Soul Cages album is an evocative work of art).

I'll resist the urge to represent my man Rundgren in this thread with his biggest '80s hit "Bang on the Drum All Day," since everyone's heard it a million times during their drive home from work on Friday afternoon, so instead I'll throw in this cool Rundgren tune, recorded with his band Utopia:

Fix Your Gaze:

Crowded House are another favorite.  They only managed to break one single through in the States ("Don't Dream It's Over"), but they achieved a lot more success everywhere else, and justly so.  Niel Finn is one of our best songwriters, one of those guys that other musicians point to when asked to list their influences, and still putting out great stuff today.  I think his writing has gotten better with the years, but since this is an '80s thread:

World Where You Live:

And another slab of quality '80s pop, courtesy of Prefab Sprout.  This song and the album it came from were produced by Thomas Dolby, which automatically doubles the eighties-ness of it.

Appetite:

Speaking of the redoubtable Mr. Dolby:

One of Our Submarines (I always wished this was the song that got released from his debut album instead of "Blinded Me With Science," as it's approximately 6000 times better):

Finally, an ear-bending piece from the 1980s lineup of King Crimson.

Shame indeed.  It's an '80s icon, but it's so ubiquitous I figured it needed no re-introduction.  Dolby's put out a lot of excellent tunes that most people haven't heard, so figured I'd post one of his lesser known tracks.  I've always loved "One of Our Submarines" - very atmospheric.

Cinderella, "Nobody's Fool," one of my guilty pleasures.

Call me crazy, but I like 80's girls.  The hair was teased, the boobs were real, the legs were long and fishnetted, the skirts were short, and the tattoos were kept to a minimum.  Perhaps I like that because it was the late 80's and early 90's (the 90's did not officially begin until 1992) when I started noticing girls and that's what they looked like.

Anyway, here's a hilarious so bad it's great song.  God bless KISS.

Here's a variety of 80's gems, ranging from pop, rock, new wave and ska:

First up, Big Country's "IN A BIG COUNTRY". Very unique sound for the time, especially the guitars that sound like bag pipes.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/bw2o_Go4QWI?fs=1&amp;amp;hl=en_US" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/bw2o_Go4QWI?fs=1&amp;amp;hl=en_US</a>

Next up: Madness..there two big US pop hits were "OUR HOUSE" and "IT MUST BE LOVE", but stuff like "HOUSE OF FUN" were light years better:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/PzvveVJgWkM?fs=1&amp;amp;hl=en_US" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/PzvveVJgWkM?fs=1&amp;amp;hl=en_US</a>

Billy Squire still rocks hard and looks great for a guy now in his early 60s:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/_5zNmuXD8xQ?fs=1&amp;amp;hl=en_US" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/_5zNmuXD8xQ?fs=1&amp;amp;hl=en_US</a>

Ratt had a good pop "metal" hit with "ROUND AND ROUND"..Look for Milton Berle in a cameo:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/8M60rLoCbbo?fs=1&amp;amp;hl=en_US" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/8M60rLoCbbo?fs=1&amp;amp;hl=en_US</a>

Bruce Hornsby and the Range had a handful of radio hits and were a nice alternate choice from all of the hair bands and the synth pop. Bruce actually toured with The Grateful Dead for a period:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/D1NAGhiVqdg?fs=1&amp;amp;hl=en_US" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/D1NAGhiVqdg?fs=1&amp;amp;hl=en_US</a>

The Tubes "TALK TO YA LATER"...much better than their hit "SHE'S A BEAUTY"

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/hjD4_j7flQU?fs=1&amp;amp;hl=en_US" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/hjD4_j7flQU?fs=1&amp;amp;hl=en_US</a>

Split Enz later became Crowded House..A lost gem.. "I GOT YOU":

Some good stuff there, S&C.  I've been meaning to check out more of the Tubes based on what little I've heard, and the song you posted just got me interested again.  Maybe I'll download some of their stuff and load it up on my iPod for my run tonight.

Glad you posted some Hornsby, too.  Shows what a dweeb I was in high school that I was listening to Bruce Hornsby albums while the other kids were spinning Def Leppard and M.C. Hammer.

Speaking of Split Enz, here's one of the last tracks they released before they imploded and gave rise to Crowded House - a song CH re-recorded for their first album, so definitely of interest to Finn fans:

Todd Rungren was shit! He could not sing, his songs were weak and he was a fag to boot! (not that there is anything wrong with that) LOL

I was never much of a Todd Rundgren fan, either. I never could figure out what the attraction was there.

Then again, Todd Rundgren fans will probably not appreciate one of my favorites from the early 1980s:

*sigh*  He was great, and he was good enough to get on Madden 11.

Oh yeah, Boid?  #1 rule of insulting:  don't insult unless you can spell the target's name correctly.

Anyways, enough negativity.  I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Pet Shop Boys:

A flash in the pan over here, Simply Red is still packing them in in Europe. Here's his anti Reagan pop hit performed in London. (Check out the size of the band)
