This is a terrific film and this scene is one of its finest moments:

I've only recently gotten into Chaplin. Despite my aversion to silent films, I found MODERN TIMES to be solid enough. GOLD RUSH wasn't as good and at times a little laborious. I've only seen parts of CITY LIGHTS, but really liked what I saw. I should be getting that in full soon. Need to get around to LIMELIGHT too.

I'm glad I ordered these when I did as wbshop has since yanked all of them from their store.

Beautiful sentiment, but I find the speech to be overlong.  THE GREAT DICTATOR has some great moments, and it was a brave film for the time, but it is not one of my favorite Chaplin films.  But then again, it's still Chaplin and I'd recommend it to anybody.  A lot of people feel it's one of his greater films, but me?  Give me THE KID.  Sweet, silent, to the point, and a beautiful mix of comedy and genuine drama.  The ending's a bit more subtle too.
