Who says Besser won't sell?

And updated FRONT art with new side pics

New side pics:
What, no shots of Joe Palma?

Offline metaldams

All I know is this......Muriel Landers true potential will finally be seen by the general DVD buying public.  Oh sure, we all got a taste in our public domain copies of BELA LUGOSI MEETS A BROOKLYN GORILLA, but prime Landers will finally be released to the public and I can't wait to see the reactions on this board.

SWEET AND HOT is the only Stooge short I list in the category, "so bad it's good."  The heat is on!

Thanks for the update, falsealarms! The description on the back really rounds it out, huh? Never thought they'd mention contemporary actors (Robin Williams and Jim Carrey) on one of these sets =P heh.

And glad they put in some more Joe pictures on the side there. Only fits right, even though I favor Shemp.

Can't wait to get my hands on this, the final volume, in a MAGNIFICENT set! Great job, Sony! Now just make sure it's in two-slim-case-width and it'll be PERFECT ;D hehe

Offline ProfessorStooge

I so can not wait to buy the final volume. I can then remove the 55 Stooge VHS tapes that have the 190 shorts on them and clear shelf space for more collectibles. I have the tape series that Columbia Tristar released from 1993-1996 (45 tapes, with 3 shorts on each one) and 1 tape with Brideless Groom and Malice in the Palace on it. There are also 9 tapes that have the remaining shorts dubbed on them.

Offline Shemp_Diesel

The set looks nice, real nice. Can't wait for June to get here, even though I have a lot of Abbott & Costello to tide me over.

ProfessorStoogeJust a reminder  -  Don't get rid of all your VHS tapes. Some of your tapes contain the full-screen versions of the matted wide-screen shorts that were released on Volume 7.

On another note  -  Why in the world did SONY tarnish the back cover of Volume 8 by putting the name of the obnoxious, annoying Robin Williams on there?!
Oh well, I forgive them since they didn't put a picture of him on the back cover!  I would've preferred that they put the name of Jerry Lewis and then the contemporary Jim Carrey name on there.

I've never seen this, but your post intrigued me.  So I headed over to the review section on this forum and read the funniest review ever.  By you, metaldams, as well.  From 2001 you wrote:

DO NOT VIEW SWEET AND HOT IF YOU ARE.....pregnant; are on the medications prozac, welbutrin, zyloft, or viagra; have diabetes; high blood pressure; high cholestorol; are on chemotherapy; or like good television.

SIDE EFFECTS OF SWEET AND HOT MAY INCLUDE....diarehea, leprosy, impotence, demonic posession, indigestion, vomiting, sterilization, scholiosis, spontaneous combustion, loss of hair, blindness, suicidal tendencies, clinical depression, profuse sweating, difficulty in breathing, seizures, heart attacks, strokes, dry mouth, chicken pox, and finally, death.

I can't wait to see this finally!!!  :D

Yeah, I used to be a funny guy.  What the hell happened?  No, but seriosuly, thanks for the compliment.

Yeah, SWEET AND HOT's quite a trip, and it's all on Muriel Landers and that ludicrous barn animal montage.  Besser's just wallpaper, he has nothing to do with the insanity of SWEET AND HOT.  I really can't wait to see the reactions on this board, which is one of the reasons why I can't wait for this set to be released.

The worst Stooge short is HORSING AROUND, that's just because it's plain boring.  SWEET AND HOT may be bad, but it's certainly not boring.

A box set of the 5 Curly-Joe features would be an excellent product. Although these days, retailers have been selling movie collections (double and triple features) in cases that could hold one DVD. That way, people can increase space on a DVD rack. If that's the case, then the films would be put on double-sided DVDs. I wonder if Sony would include Stop, Look, and Laugh in the set, bringing the total up to 6.

That would be great to have all the movies in one set!
But wouldn't the set then include:

Have Rocket, Will Travel -1960
Stop! Look! and Laugh! - 1961
Snow White and the Three Stooges - 1962
The Three Stooges Meet Hercules - 1962
The Three Stooges in Orbit - 1963
The Three Stooges Go Around the World in a Daze - 1963
The Outlaws IS Coming! - 1968
Kook’s Tour - 1970

To have all the movies in it? Just a thought.

Regarding 'Kook's Tour', and please correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know the master footage hasn't been found, and the source of the VHS tape that came out years' ago was from the Super 8 film version of the TV pilot. If 'Kook's Tour' comes out on DVD, it'll still be the inferior quality version that was released on tape. Am I pretty much in the ball park with this opinion? I leave this in the hands of the more knowledgable members.

It has been on DVD for at least 5 years. See the videography.

I do have intentions of keeping my Stooges VHS tapes, despite VHS being phased out. I plan on putting them in storage once Volume 8 gets released. I just wish to clear them from the shelves and rearrange my collectibles in the available space.

"Being" phased out?

It's been dead for several years.  There's no phasing out left.

Dammit!  There's a disclaimer??  Crap, here comes the clinical depression and dry mouth.  [cry] [cry] :(  And I could swear my left arm was tingling earlier.  You know, I could sue because this thing wasn't adequately displayed.  You guys are just lucky I'm not pregnant.    [pie]

Very true, but I still use VCRs to record. I don't own a DVR and never intend to.

I know. I can’t even sell any of my DVDs that I don’t watch anymore on Ebay. It looks like very few people are buying DVDs now. This is why I’m surprised that these Stooges sets don’t get a Blu-ray version released along with the DVDs. Not that I’d care, but it seems like studios are focusing more on Blu-ray now and are trying to push the format.

The Outlaws IS Coming! - 1968

Didn't this come out in 1965 ?

DOH! Sorry about that.

And as far as Snow White & the Three Stooges I know it is on DVD. But I still have not picked it up. I have the VHS version and never really watch it. It's a hard for me to watch it. And it would have been nice to have it in a package with the other movies. But I know it will not happen with the rights and all.
Thanks, and sorry about the mix up on the dates again.

Also just for fun, does anyone have any of the Stooges on BETA or Laser Disc?

Offline ProfessorStooge

Weren't Laserdiscs the size of a 33 1/3 rpm record? I understand that format had several disadvantages. The discs were heavy and more prone to damage. Also back then, nothing could be recorded onto a laserdisc.

Offline pipboytaylor

Most of the pro/cons of getting this set seems to be focused on Joe Besser/Joe Palma shorts, but for me, I really will be looking forward to seeing one of my favorite and most unique shorts...BLUNDER BOYS!!!

I have something in the same league as BETA or Laserdisc -- Stooges on CED videodiscs.  CED was the poor man's laserdisc.  CED consisted of 12-inch vinyl discs housed in quarter-inch thick styrene covers.  Each disc contained a maximum of 120 minutes of programming, 60 minutes on each side.  In the case of the Stooges shorts, that equates to six unedited shorts per disc.  As I recall, the cost of each Stooges disc was about $20.

The Stooges CEDs in my possession include: Volume 1, containing Dizzy Pilots, A Bird in the Head, Three Sappy People, Uncivil Warriors, Three Missing Links, and Micro-phonies; and Volume 2, containing An Ache in Every Stake, Calling All Curs, Pop Goes the Easel, Woman Haters, Three Little Beers, and Tassels in the Air.  Volume 1 was released in 1982, volume 2 in 1983.  If memory serves me correctly, CED was the only commercial source of Stooges home videos in the 1982-1983 time frame.  All I know is that back then I was very excited to purchase and view these two videodiscs.

By the way, CED stands for "Capacitance Electronic Disc."  CED was the budget video system played by physical contact with a stylus, just like that of a record player.  RCA released the CED system in the early 1980s, just prior to the commercial success of VHS recorders.  Once VHS appeared, CED disappeared.  I'm pretty darn sure that some garbage repository in this country contains tens of thousands of unused CED players.  RCA lost their shirts when the CED technology went down the drain.  This loss was the impetus for RCA being sold to GE a couple of years later.

I have a Stooges box set on Laserdisc.  Yes, I remember those! I never knew what they were really called, but I called them RCA Selectavision. Pretty neat!

VCR's are going to be around for a while longer, simply because that medium lasted from the 70's to the 90's. I still record on my VCR, and don't own a DVR or a DVD burner, for that matter, but I would like to have them eventually.
