I'm not sure if this has been reported elsewhere, but I thought it worth noting that AMC is promoting its Three Stooges marathon as the world premiere of the digitally restored shorts.

I'm not very happy with AMC this morning, since they are choosing to show commercials during the shorts.  I wouldn't mind commercials in between the shorts at all, but interrupting a 15-20 minute short is just obnoxious and annoying.  Thank God I've got the DVDs.

Not only that, but so far this morning they've interrupted each short twice to insert commercials.

I'm glad they're showing the shorts for the casual fan, I guess, but I'm with you - Thank God I've got the DVDs!

AMC is showing commercials "during" the shorts? Wow, how they've changed. I would watch this and check it out, but I'm spending my New Year's Eve at work. Luckily I have a half day and get out at 2pm, so when I get home, I'll see how bad this marathon really is. Any chance they're showing the restored versions?

Offline falsealarms

Really no reason to watch a marathon of these shorts, especially when they are interrupted by commercials like they are. After all, we can stage our own ad-free marathon anytime we want with the chronological DVDs.

I just checked it out. "Pardon My Scotch" just finished and "Hoi Polloi" has just started. Interesting. These ARE the restored versions! I guess Sony plans on using these prints for TV broadcasts as well.

Fuck those commercials during the shorts. Even though AMC tended to show the same shorts over and over when they had aired them back in the earlier part of the decade, they at least kept commercials to be IN BETWEEN them. Cutting them up like Spike did is just annoying.

Very disappointing. The only thing to hope for is that this marathon encourages people to buy the DVD sets.

Oh! Sorry, Rich! Didn't see that. Heh! My head hasn't been on straight lately. Too much aggravation at work. I'm happy I have a three day weekend to catch up on some lost sleep.

I agree with Loco. Screw AMC! I'll have my own marathon whenever I want, wherever I want. I just can't wait until the Volume 8 DVD comes out so I can have a Joe marathon.

[And that actually wasn't a sarcasm. A Joe marathon is something you never see on TV and probably never will. So, it actually might be quite interesting to have one.]

I'm watching The Stooges Marathon on Channel 38, Boston. As usual they are showing the shorts without commercial interruption, but with lots of commercials between the shorts. The films are not the newly restored prints. And as usual the marathon is being hosted by some guys I've never heard of, probably from some local show on the station. They're apparently attempting to be amusing and also showing allegedly humorous stuff and interviews with other people from the station that I've never heard of, making the breaks between the shorts all the more interminable. They needn't have bothered, as so far they've not said, done nor shown anything interesting or amusing. At least the shorts are being shown uninterrupted. So we can see them either this way, or see better prints on AMC but with shorter but more frequent interruptions. Or just play our DVD's.

The first short in Channel 38's marathon was A PLUMBING WE WILL GO. Does anyone know the identity of the pretty lady in Monty Collins' magic act (the lady in the box)? I don't see her listed anywhere.

Have a Happy New Year, a swell weekend, get caught up on some sleep, and of course watch a lot of Stooges!
And hey, I'll attend your Besser marathon any time!

After criticizing the hosts of Channel 38's Stooges marathon, I must admit that they did come through with two good segments during the evening's foolishness.
Twice they had as a guest Terry Adams, formerly of the music group NRBQ (a group I've definitely heard of, but not familiar enough with to know the members' names). He certainly did look old enough! Turns out he's a long-time Three Stooges fan and has a new group, so they performed two songs. And they were quite good. The first was a faithful rendition of the 1936 novelty hit "The Music Goes Round and Round", played before they showed the short HALF SHOT SHOOTERS in which Curly sings a line from the song. The second song played by Adams and his group was something he said he wrote many years ago when he was younger and wondering if he'd ever meet a girl who loves The Three Stooges as much as he does. The title seemed to be "A Girl Who Loves the Stooges" and it was good! Good tune, good lyrics, and good playing. If anyone was recording the broadcast, I hope they'll put these clips on YouTube or something like that. It would be nice to be able to hear them again.

Terry Adams also told of meeting and writing to Moe Howard and Larry Fine back in the early 1970's and even brought along and showed a letter written to him by Moe. He told the story that when he mentioned to Moe that he'd just visited Larry, Moe asked how Larry was, and when Terry replied that Larry had just needed a tooth pulled, Moe responded "It serves him right!"

Here's the listing of shorts shown:
A PLUMBING WE WILL GO
WEE WEE MONSIEUR
HALF SHOT SHOOTERS
WHO DONE IT?
COOKOO CAVALIERS
3 DUMB CLUCKS
SAVED BY THE BELLE
MEN IN BLACK
THE GHOST TALKS
THREE MISSING LINKS
HOW HIGH IS UP?
SPACE SHIP SAPPY
IN THE SWEET PIE AND PIE

At different times the clueless hosts endeared themselves to Stooges fans by each stating that Shemp "sucks" and "stinks". Thanks guys.

I didn't see any Shemp shorts on AMC yesterday. Too bad. But at least I got my Shemp fix last night watching him make 2 brief appearances in ANOTHER THIN MAN on TCM.

Re: no Shemps on AMC:  I was telling my friend yesterday that when they would have the Stooges film festival in Pittsburgh back in the 1980's, they would show one Shemp short. There were loud cheers from the Shemp fans, and boos from the Curly fans.

Being a Shemp fan, I always yelled loudly for my favorite Stooge!

We watched AMC all evening last night, but I think I need a Shemp fix!

Interesting observation...  They played Another Thin Man with Shemp through the midnight hour, so ultimately TCM as well as AMC rang in the new year with the Stooges.

For me, at least, it wasn't that AMC had commercials - I don't have a problem with that - but rather when they scheduled the commercials.  If they had been in between the shorts I wouldn't have minded at all.

When I was partying over at my brother's house last night we watched the marathon for a while (because I forgot to bring my DVDs) and everyone had the same reaction to the commercial breaks.  Even my brother's girlfriend, who likes the Stooges but is basically just a casual fan, would get annoyed when they'd interrupt a gag to air more commercials.

So AMC gets a thumbs up   [santa_thumbsup] for airing the Stooges marathon, but a kick in the pants for commercial placement.    [buttkick]

I concur.  Kinda like on the Dukes of Hazard would stop before the tires left the road for a jump to break for commercials.
I hear ya.

I also hope someone recorded the broadcast.  I'd love to hear "A Girl Who Loves the Stooges."  Too perfect!!

Now I understand what Curly was making reference to when he sang that line.  Thanks for explaining that, Rich.  I didn't realize it was from a popular song of the time; I thought he was just making up a little ditty.  I did find the song on youtube (download worthy).  And actually, now that I think about it, Curly also makes reference to this song in 'Monkey Businessmen.'  When Moe is trying to get him to turn the steam valve down, Curly says 'Oh you push the first valve down...'

I love a lot of the current-at-the-time pop culture references sprinkled in to the shorts.

One of my favorite bits is in Some More of Samoa when Curly quips "Beat me, Daddy - down to the floor!", a take on the Andrew Sisters "Beat me, Daddy - eight to the bar."

Perhaps the only good bit about the AMC marathon was this little 30 sec bit, which I found a bit touching in some bizarre way:

^^ I liked that bumper as well. I thought it was cute.

I noticed AMC now has it so you can watch full shorts on their website.

They also updated their FAQ on their website:
"Will AMC air The Three Stooges or The Little Rascals again?

There is a Three Stooges marathon on Dec. 31 starting at 7AM | 6C. We have no plans to air The Little Rascals in the near future. Generally speaking, we are trying to focus on more movies, more movie-related programming and AMC Originals. That said, you can find more Stooges video online."

With that said, I wonder how long AMC plans to air the Boys. Even with all the commercials its nice to know they're at least on TV.
