The cover art looks great.  That said, I am a little surprised that Sony didn't use a still from Hold That Lion.  It's the only film to feature all three Howard Brothers.  Oh, well.  It sill looks good, regardless.  I can't wait for the release.  There is some prime Shemp included.  It should be great. ;D

The covers of the new collection are up now at http://inthebalcony.com/. Enjoy, Stooges fans!

Great! They got the "G.I. Wanna Home" title correct!

They did use a still from Hold That Lion.  It's on the right side of the picture, about the level of Curly's hand in the main picture.

I did see that, Dunrobin.  I think there are a number of fans, though, who anticipated a photo like that as the main photo on the front cover.  That's all.

This fifth collection of The Three Stooges, which features 24 digitally remastered shorts from 1946-1948, marks the end of Curly's career and the return of original Stooge Shemp.
Curly suffered a stroke on the final days of filming HALF-WITS HOLIDAY and retired at age 43. Moe realized there was only one person who could fill baby brother Curly's shoes: his older brother Shemp (who, ironically, Curly had replaced in 1932).
The Three Stooges were born in 1925 when Moe and Shemp met Larry Fine. But in the 1930's Shemp left to pursue a film career in Hollywood. By the time Moe called in 1946, he was starring in films with the likes of W.C. Fields, John Wayne and Abbott and Costello. But he accepted Moe's offer, and the original Three Stooges reunited.
Shemp's first short upon his return was FRIGHT NIGHT. And Curly did recover enough to make an appearance in HOLD THAT LION, but his health continued to deteriorate and he unfortunately passed away in 1952 at age 48.
The Three Stooges Collection Volume 5 is bittersweet for the change but filled with more fun than ever... and the added bonus of not only Larry, Moe, and Curly... but Shemp, too!

I just got The Complete Three Stooges book for Christmas and it says the reason they reused those footages is so they can give Curly some time to rest due to his failing health. The VHS video covers used to have trivia under each short and it said the same thing. I'm not 100% sure if that's the real reason, but that's what all the sources are saying.

The sources...
 - 1981-1982, authors Jeff & Greg Lenburg made that statement in The Three Stooges Scrapbook without documentation, but based on prevailing opinions. But, their statement was logical and reasonably arrived.
 - The VHS trivia notes were written by fan John Ewaniuk, who Columbia paid as a consultant. The trivia was not derived from Columbia records. Ewaniuk most likely used Scrapbook as his source.
 - Circa 1996 - 1997, Jon Solomon was finishing his The Complete Stooges manuscript. Over a period of months, he consulted numerous fans on numerous topics. I was one of those fans. One of our conversations included BEER BARREL POLECATS. Jon inquired if there was any contrary information, and I remember commenting that the Lenburgs' statement in Scrapbook seemed reasonable. To the best of my knowledge, his book's statement was derived from Scrapbook and fans' (including my own) undocumented opinions. ***

*** The book's draft was completed in 1997, and due for publication by University of Arizona Press in 1998. Delays forwarded rights and publication to C3 in 2002.

In subsequent years, I have had the opportunity to review Jules White's shooting script on file at the Motion Picture Academy Library in Beverly Hills. I've also looked at photocopies of production versions of the script, from two personal collections. There is nothing to reasonably support the conclusion that Curly's health was a factor in the use of stock footage for BEER BARREL POLECATS.

As mentioned above...
Evidence implies another reason. A future issue of The Three Stooges Journal will go into those details.

I ordered volumes 1-4 and pre-ordered volume 5 tonight on Amazon  ;D I was waiting to see how much money I have and I have a bit of extra money right now so I went ahead and ordered them all. This is something I really want to support and want to be able to eventually have all the shorts on DVD. If we don't support them now, then we won't get all 190 so I had to do my part. With these 5, we're just a bit over half way home ;D

Just a heads up, I'm actually glad I waited until this week to order because late last week all the sets were still $19.99 and tonight it said they lowered the price on the first 4 to $13.99 and Volume 5 is $16.99 I think. So, for anyone thinking about these sets now would be a great time to order! With shipping included it was 89 bucks all together.

Can't wait for my sets to arrive!

Any day now, I look to see a review of the new set, here, from Stooged and Confused.

I'm also looking forward to seeing Three Little Pirates in pristine condition-- without the vertical scratches!

Hi all---sorry I've been MIA the last several weeks, but between work and the economic repercussions I've been seeing, along with my dog's health, I've been more than pre-occupied.

To make matters even worse, my original Sony contact no longer works there. Efforts to try and get her replacement to send press releases and advanced review copies have not been successful. She hasn't done what the past contact I had there did.

When I called today to find out when my advanced copy would arrive, she said they cut back on them and were sending out fewer sets. Whatever! Looks like they won't be continuing to send them out anymore.

Right now the price is too much and it wouldnt have made a difference where i made the order as i would've paid roughly the same. However I made the order in January when the set was only $24.99 on amazon.ca.

The Australian dollar is buying 83 Canadian cents (this morning) compared to 65 US cents. I made a mock order on the US site of the same items and i would've paid $89.43 USD to $91.89 Canadian and all up with the conversion rate i wound up saving about $20 on the canadian site. The only difference is the US quickest international shipping is 3-5 days to the Canadian's 3-7 days, big deal.

The 3-7 day shipping process has started today, on the US site they might've shipped the items next week which i was waiting for anyway.

Mine shipped early, early today. Ordered it through DVDEmpire.com for just over $20, free shipping. And their shipping is usually pretty quick too. I ought to get it right around release date, perhaps Monday if I'm lucky :)

Lucky man. I pre-ordered mine from Amazon on 1/6 and mine hasn't shipped yet. Still have a delivery date of 3/19.

According to any place I've read about Shemp, his birthday was March 4th, same as my mother.  Last year, they would have combined for their 250th birthday.

I just received my copy of Volume 5. I will watch them in full over the next few days, but I went straight to "Three Little Pirates" to let you know of the quality of the transfer. Frickin' AMAZING!! Not a scratch, spot or blemish on it. All of those vertical lines are GONE!! I just thought you guys would like to know. Sorry I didn't get an advanced copy this time (the new rep at Sony is a weasel), but I'll work on my review soon.

That positively answers perhaps the biggest question surrounding this set.

It looks as though a tiny bit of Three Loan Wolves has been cut out. At the end after the boys had finished telling the kid the story, Moe told him that noone came to get him and then straight away the camera paned to the kid who said "Oh so you just moved in on me eh, im going to find my mother" and when the camera paned back to the boys halfway through what the kid was saying they were holding their faces, so the kid slapped them but it wasnt shown.

Did the kid slap them and it just wasnt shown?

That edit has always been there. Perhaps, Brent could shed more light on it, but it is evident that the boy triple slapped the Stooges. However, that edit has been in every print I have ever seen of that short.
