Rufus Butterworth (Bob Denver) and Bert Gramus (Herb Edelman) have been friends since childhood. Bert and his wife own Bert's Place, a struggling diner, and Rufus owns a taxi and helps out around the restaurant. Rufus' constant get-rich-quick schemes never pan out, but do manage to create comedic predicaments for the two friends.

Unbeknownst to Rufus and Bert, a bookie (Joe Besser) has been operating out of the diner. He suddenly disappears, just before two thugs turn up looking for him, and our good guys find themselves literally holding the bag with $50,000 in missing mob bets.
