SALUTE TO COMMANDER BYRD

Commander Richard E. Byrd's expedition to reach the South Pole had recently set up camp on the Antarctica shelf to conduct several months of scientific and meteorological studies, in advance of the historic flight over the Pole (occurred on Nov. 29). Saluting Byrd and his team, the Gannett Newspaper Group's radio station WGY-AM Schenectady NY with the cooperation of NBC in NYC, broadcast an all-star special program of comedians, singers and Broadway performers. The cast performed at NBC, and the broadcast was relayed by WGY to a series of short-wave radio hookups to Byrd's 42-man compound.


Schedule for 1 hour, 11PM to Midnight Eastern, the performers kept the broadcast going until 1AM.

Ted Healy was currently starring in A NIGHT IN VENICE at the Shubert Theatre. Margaret Irving had recently finished costarring with the Marx Bros. in ANIMAL CRACKERS at the 44th Street Theatre.
