ADVENTURES OF ELLERY QUEEN, THE - The Man With the Red Beard

Air Date/Released Thursday, June 17, 1943
Station/Studio NBC Red (radio)
Featuring Joe Besser (Solo)

Murder mysteries are solved by Ellery Queen, genius-level private detective and son of Police Inspector Richard Queen. A story climaxing in a murder is presented, followed by two celebrity-guest “Armchair Detectives” who would present their thoughts on the clues presented in the story, and attempt to solve the crime. The drama would then return to the story, as Ellery Queen would reveal the culprit through his skills of deduction and logic. The west coast episode would air the show live on Thursday night with two celebrity armchairs. The east coast would air a transcription on Saturday evenings, substituting two new celebrity guests in the armchairs.

An insurance agent carrying benefit money for the USO fund is murdered, and Queen recovers the money and identifies the murderer. The evening’s armchair detectives are Joe Besser who was costarring in SONS O’ FUN on Broadway, and queen of burlesque dancer Gypsy Rose Lee.

The east coast mystery aired two nights later on June 19, with armchair actress Virginia Field and radio actor Norman Tokar.

Breaking the usual format of Ellery at the scene of the crime, he solves the mystery from his apartment study.
