MGM and Maxwell House teamed up to present GOOD NEWS, a variety show that was also designed to showcase current MGM films, and present dramatization digests and behind-the-scenes looks with its stars.
Host Robert Young conducts a tour of the MGM lot for listeners, and his 'tour group' includes a mother and young son who is only interested in meeting Ted Healy. Getting his wish, Healy and stooges Garner, Wolfe & Hakins quiz him on his math and spelling skills... only to be shown up when they discover the boy is a prodigy attending Oxford University. Spencer Tracy, Joan Crawford and Alan Curtis appear to promote and perform scenes from their MGM feature MANNEQUIN (1937). Mickey Rooney sings "When I Grow Up to Be a Man," and opera singer Igor Gorin performs "Thine Alone." Young and Tracy present "America on Parade," a tribute to fallen soldiers.
Per Mousie Garner in his autobiography, the program was generally panned, especially by Variety. Exception was Ted Healy and his stooges, who Variety singled out for great comedy and recommended that they become a regular part of the cast.
