LADY WITH THE TORCH, THE

Air Date/Released Sunday, July 4, 1999
Station/Studio Encore/Starz! / Top Hat Prods.
Host/Star Glenn Close
Featuring Miscellaneous Appearances

Documentary of the history of Columbia Pictures, on the occasion of the studio's 75th anniversary, produced by Columbia and Starz/Encore Movie Channel. Hosted by award-winning actress Glenn Close, classic clips from studio's film vaults tell the story of Harry Cohn building a respected studio from its humble 1924 beginning on Hollywood's "poverty row," the financial problems that almost destroyed Columbia in the 1970s, and to its relocation to the Culver City site that formerly housed MGM. Feature films, serials and short subjects are discussed, with The Three Stooges receiving a respectful nod as one of Columbia's popular, money-making legacies. Clips of the Stooges are from WOMAN HATERS (1934), THREE LITTLE PIGSKINS (1934) and MOVIE MANIACS (1936).
