YOGI's SPACE RACE - Race Through Wet Galoshes

Air Date/Released Saturday, November 4, 1978
Station/Studio NBC / Hanna-Barbera Prods.
Featuring Joe Besser (Solo)

YOGI's SPACE RACE (1978 - 1979) recycled Hanna-Barbera's WACKY RACES & LAFF-A-LYMPICS formats, and capitalized on the STAR WARS craze. Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Jabberjaw and several new characters launch into outer space to engage in inter-planetary races. The villain is Captain Good, the secret alter ego of evil Phantom Phink, who switches between identities as needed to win the race.

Joe Besser is the voice of Scare Bear, Yogi's sidekick. Gary Owens, sponsor of The Three Stooges' 1983 star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame costars as the announcer and race play-by-play commentator. Jabberjaw (Frank Welker) is a friendly great white shark, adapted on Curly Howard and Rodney Dangerfield.

The space racers head for the old west planet of Wet Galoshes, home of space outlaws, banditos and rustlers. A paradise for Phink, who sets to plotting with the natives to disrupt the efforts of Yogi, Huck and the rest of the good-guys. Unless guest-star Quick Draw McGraw can bring some western justice to the proceedings.

13 episodes were produced. It initially aired in the 90-minute YOGI's SPACE RACE (joined by GALAXY GOOF-UPS, and two additional H-B shows, THE BUFORD FILES and THE GALLOPING GHOST). After 8 weeks, GALAXY GOOF-UPS spun off into its own half-hour show, and SPACE RACE continued in a 1-hour format. In early 1979, SPACE RACE also became a stand-alone half-hour series.
