The wife (Janet Leigh) of a San Francisco mob lawyer hires Gus Monk (George Maharis), an unlicensed private investigator, to hold an envelope of damaging organized crime information to protect her husband. But the lawyer winds up dead, and Monk was left unconscious at the scene as a witness. The mob boss (Carl Betz) being framed for the murder claims his innocence, and as dead bodies and double-crosses pile up, the mobster gives Monk 24 hours to get to the bottom of everything, or die.

Joe Besser guest stars as an excitable Fisherman's Wharf lobster vendor.
