Joey Barnes hosts a network, late-night New York talk show. Episodes revolve around his professional and personal life, with celebrities appearing as themselves. At home are Joey's beautiful wife Ellie, and maid Hilda. Joe Besser costars as Mr. Jillson, the building superintendent, a high-strung man with a heart of gold, and a never-seen wife who is only heard yelling "Jillson!" through the building's ventilation system. Rounding out the main characters is Larry Corbett, Joey's best friend, head writer and manager.

Joey's network TV Masquerade Ball is coming up, and Ellie has her heart set on going as Robin Hood and Maid Marian, with Jillson and Larry as Friar Tuck and Alan o'Dale. But Joey is determined to go as a matador after scoring a hit with a bullfighting skit on his show. The residents of Sherwood Forest unite with Hilda to guilt Joey into changing his mind.


In the series' 2nd and 3rd seasons it aired in color, one of the first situation comedies to do so.
