Joey Barnes hosts a network, late-night New York talk show. Episodes revolve around his professional and personal life, with celebrities appearing as themselves. At home are Joey's beautiful wife Ellie, and maid Hilda. Joe Besser costars as Mr. Jillson, the building superintendent, a high-strung man with a heart of gold, and a never-seen wife who is only heard yelling "Jillson!" through the building's ventilation system. Rounding out the main characters is Larry Corbett, Joey's best friend, head writer and manager.
Ellie's news that she's going to have a baby turns Joey into a neurotic, over-protective and proud papa. He abandons the monologue to brag the news to his audience, which backfires when thousands of dollars worth of viewers' gifts begin showing up on their doorstep... followed by an IRS agent.
