Joey Barnes is an L.A. Public Relations executive, working at a Hollywood advertising agency, whose clients frequently include celebrities. Single and still living at home, Joey's easygoing manner is often taken advantage of by his boss, and even his family who think his job makes him a player in the Hollywood community.

Under no circumstances does Joey want a birthday party, especially after learning his mother is planning a surprise party. Girlfriend Peggy changes his mind and Joey slyly drops hints to Mom that he'd love one after all. Misunderstandings lead him to miss the party, and thinking he's been forgotten, Joey sulks while Jillson tries to cheer him up.
