SCTV NETWORK 90 - Melvin & Howards

Air Date/Released Friday, May 29, 1981
Station/Studio NBC / Canwest TV Net

A spin-off of Chicago's Second City, the Canadian troupe became the most well-known after launching their own television show in Canada, and once it received US syndication, it rivaled SNL in popularity. Like SNL, many cast members went on to successful film and TV acting careers. After the U.S. syndication success of the Canadian episodes, NBC picked up the show for a 90-minute edition that ran from 1981 - 1983, SCTV NETWORK 90.

In this sketch, the cast lampoons MELVIN & HOWARD (1980), Jonathan Demme's comedy-drama about Melvin Dummar, who inherited a portion of Howard Hughes' estate after a good samaritan act. In SCTV's version, the sketch bits are promos for a new TV series, beginning with Dummar picking up a stranded Hughes, and forcing him into a sing-along. He soon picks up additional "Howards," including Cosell, Baker and Curly. When Curly joins the group, they break out in a chorus of Oh Elaine, from SQUAREHEADS OF THE ROUND TABLE (1948) (which ironically starred Shemp as the third Stooge).

Cast: Joe Flaherty (Howard Hughes), Rick Moranis (Melvin Dummar), Eugene Levy (Howard Cosell), Dave Thomas (Sen. Howard Baker), John Candy (Curly Howard)

Crew: Milad Bessada (Director), Andrew Alexander, Jack E. Rhodes, Len Stuart, Bernard Sahlins, Scott Baker, Sheldon Patinkin (Exec. Producers), Joe Flaherty, Dave Thomas, Harold Ramis (Producers)
