Widow Lucy Barker moves in with her daughter and son-in-law to help out the family financially and with raising her grandchildren. Her business partner and son-in-law’s father also moves in to keep each side of the family on equal footing in the household. The image of a senior citizen engaging in the usual Lucy-hijinks did not translate well to a 1980s audience and the sitcom was cancelled after several weeks.
Cleaning out the basement, Lucy finds her childhood saxophone and convinces granddaughter Becky to take up the instrument. Becky’s enthusiasm quickly dies, and she’s left to find a way to give it up without hurting Lucy’s feelings. After her parents discover her dilemma, they have this conversation with Becky...
Margo: Honey, our own feelings don’t always come first.
Becky: What do you mean?
Margo: Remember the time grandma sat through The Three Stooges film festival with you? 6 full hours of “woob, woob, woob” “nyuk, nyuk, nyuk!” [Margo & Ted pantomime eye pokes and head bonks on each other]
