Spinoff of the “Family” sketches from THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW. Caustic but good-hearted Mama Harper rules over her dysfunctional family. In the BURNETT sketches, Mama was portrayed as bitter, unappreciative and narcissistic old woman. To make the character palatable for a weekly sitcom, Joe Hamilton (ex-husband of Carol Burnett) and star Vicki Lawrence reimaged ‘Mama’ as a no-nonsense grandmother, hiding her love of family under a battle-axe facade.
The TV game show JEOPARDY! holds contestant try-outs in Raytown, and Mama surprisingly wins a spot on the show. Mama has little success in the game... until the category of “Comedy Teams” comes up, and she wins $1000 with her knowledge of The Three Stooges.
