Station/Studio | ABC / Steven Bochco Prod. |
A child prodigy graduates medical school at age 12. Stories revolve around his family and friend relationships, professional life as a hospital intern, and dealing with the adult responsibilities he assumed at such an early age.
Doogie feels that Vinnie’s interest in the study of film comedy has little merit, as opposed to practicing medicine, causing a rift between the two best friends. Dealing with a young foster home patient with serious medical issues and a negative outlook on life, Doogie discovers the power of laughter as a healing tool.
The Three Stooges are spotlighted in several scenes, as the young boy and hospital staff become engaged in watching SNOW WHITE AND THE THREE STOOGES (1961).
Later, Vinnie asks for Doogie’s input on a school paper he’s writing on film comedy. Doogie [sarcastically] complies...
Doogie: OK. Comedy appeals to the better angels of our nature.
Vinnie: Whoa, I’m breathless.
Doogie: It transports us on a winged chariot from the valley of mundanity to the Elysian Fields...
Vinnie: Yeah, yeah... we’ll correct the spelling later.
Doogie: ... where we can revel in the subtleties of Moe, Larry and Curly.
Vinnie: Really? You think Curly’s subtle?
Doogie: I’m being facetious Vinnie.
Vinnie: About the Stooges?
Later, trying to break thru to young patient Jimmy by putting a tape of SNOW WHITE AND THE THREE STOOGES in the VCR. Orderly Raymond begins watching the movie with Jimmy, until a disapproving Dr. Canfield enters and finds the orderly taking an unscheduled break. As Jimmy slinks back to work, Canfield quickly finds himself drawn into the Stooges film and enjoying a few laughs himself.
Canfield: (to Jimmy) When I was your age, I had a Three Stooges cereal bowl.
Jimmy: Gosh, you must’a come from money.
Doogie comes back into the room, surprised to see Dr. Canfield taking a Stooges break. Canfield finds the humor in being caught, and with a smile on his face, says as he leaves the room...
Canfield: (to Jimmy) From one group of Stooges to another, bye Jimmy.
Doogies joins Jimmy in watching the movie.
Jimmy: Man, this is great. These guys are...
Doogie: Who do you think is the best Stooge?
Jimmy: Moe. Definitely Moe.
Doogie: Moe? No way. Larry.
Jimmy: Larry?
Doogie: Absolutely.
Jimmy: Forget it. Larry couldn’t shine Moe’s shoes.
Doogie: OK, Moe. Three grown men, and not one cool haircut between them.
