Carol Burnett's long-running (1967 - 1978) variety show. Guests, comedy skits and musical performances... but, best-remembered for its recurring character sketches such as "The Family," "Mrs. Whiggins," "As the Stomach Turns," the hilarious moments featuring the interplay between Tim Conway and Harvey Korman, and each episode’s grand musical finale.
In “The Family,” Mama (Vicki Lawrence), Eunice (Carol Burnett) and Ed (Harvey Korman) travel to Hollywood and visit successful brother Phillip (Roddy McDowall), a Pulitzer and Academy Award winning author and screenwriter. The dimwitted and self-centered visitors are unable to appreciate and comprehend his accomplishments. Ed has a suggestion for Phillip’s screenplay about the story of Queen Elizabeth (I) and Lord Essex...
Ed: I’m no writer, but I think that thing needs some peppin’ up a bit. You know, like in The Three Stooges movies? Did ‘ya see that one the other night on channel 12, 5 o’clock? I’ll tell ‘ya, it just cracks me up when that bald one... ‘ya know, the one that’s always doin’ this... (performs head-bonk and nose tweek on Phillip)... no, no, it’s the one with the bangs that’s always doin’ this... (eye-pokes Phillip)... Anyway, one of them, he’s in the bakery, see, and he’s kneedin’ dough, he’s workin’ with the dough, and all of a sudden some glue falls into the dough. Now, what’a’ya think happens? He gets stuck to the dough, he can’t move! So he calls his two buddies over to help ‘im out. Right? So they come over, and now they’re stuck! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha…! You know there’s no way they’re gonna get loose! They are stuck! Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha...! (sigh)... Put somethin’ like that in Phil.
Other show segments feature a takeoff on the movie THE HEIRESS, and the cast’s musical finale pays tribute to the music and lyrics of Sheldon Harrick and Jerry Bock (FIDDLER ON THE ROOF).
