LETHAL WEAPON 2

Air Date/Released Friday, July 7, 1989
Station/Studio Warner Brothers

In the aftermath of a deadly car chase, Sgts. Murtaugh and Riggs find millions in S. African gold Kruggerands in the trunk of the suspect vehicle. Tracking the coins to the S. African [Apartheid] Consulate, the detectives suspect a diplomat of heading a drug smuggling operation. Threats from the diplomat, under "diplomatic immunity," result in the heroes' reassignment to protecting mob witness Leo Getz. It turns out that Getz once laundered some of the S. African's money, and the Sgts. are back on the case. Continuing to operate under "diplomatic immunity," the S. Africans begin terrorizing members of the LAPD and their families... and the villains may have had a hand in Riggs' wife's killing a few years earlier.

Once more, Mel Gibson pays tribute to his favorite comedians...
- Riggs relaxing at home with his dog, watching the Stooges in THREE MISSING LINKS (1938).
- In a scene at the South African Consulate offices, Riggs holds diplomat (and smuggler) Arjen Rudd and some of his associates at gunpoint. He implies that he is about to shoot one, by reciting "eeney, meeney, miney...," and with a "... hey, Moe!" he shoots out the diplomat's prized aquarium.
