Well, I may be one of the few that trudged out in 105 degree heat to the local 7-11 to get my 3-D glasses, but there was NO WAY I was going to miss seeing the "color" Spooks. Granted, this was around 1981, so I don't know if they've ever shown the "real" version since. But with Shemp's "What a beautiful pair of eyes!", the needle that Dr. Jekyll holds towards the camera for a bit too long (but it works), all makes up for a wonderful short--especially the opening card--it was neat to see a different beginning than the usual one.Going by my 1981 viewing, I still have to give it 4 pokes. If I dig up the DVD, even though I can't give it 5, I'll give it 5 in spirit!(Luckily, I was able to tranfer it to DVD before that ol' 1981 tape disintergrated!)

Good 3-D effort. Main attractions, New opening scene with Larrys head hitting the screen, Shemp-Bat and the gorilla as always. Stooges, gorilla, Pies and a scary house. Priceless.

There were some obvious screw ups in this one, but I still loved it. Norma Randall is gorgeous. One thing I liked about her other than her obviously beautiful appearance was her look of absolute delight as Moe, Shemp and Larry were throwing the pies at the Mad Doctor and his ugly assistant. She was having a blast....that is, until part of a pie got int her mouth.
Two things to do if you are in a Pie Fight with the Three Stooges: Close your eyes and your mouth.
Three eye pokes.

I always wondered why the 3-D ones with Shemp were in black & white, it seems redundant to me. Perhaps the shorts were in color originally & later made BW for television. Not many people had color sets in the early 50s. I agree that the 3-D scenes slowed this one down."For Duty & Humanity."

"Spooks" was a horror/comedy short I can really tip my hat to, thanks to that Stooge brand of comedy. I also have a pair of 3D glasses, so next time it comes on, I'll check out those effects for myself. I loved that bat!ISLIPP- there's no better way to speed through your day! ©2001

Mike,I don't know quite what you mean by "the 3D not mastered as well as Pardon My Backfire", since I've NEVER seen either of these episodes in 3D. But, I CAN say that the comedy lags in a 2D version of the episodes while the Stooges "stop the story" to throw/hurl/lob something directly at the camera. However, the "3D-seen-in-2D" scenes of the evil scientist with the "extra-long" syringe pointed directly at the audience is creepy enough ... I can only IMAGINE how skin-crawling it must have been for a 3D audience!Edited by - Giff me dat fill-em! on 5/27/01 4:40:22 PM

I think it this is a very funny short. I actually have a pair of 3-D glasses, and they did work a little bit, and it was fantastic!

I enjoyed this one a lot. The main reason that the 3-D gags might seem bad to us is simply because we're not seeing it in 3-D like it was intended. I would love to actually see this one in its original 3-D form with the glasses and all. Only thing is, I've yet to see decent 3-D done on a television screen and this short isn't likely to get re-released on the big screen. So, I may not ever get that chance. Ah, well, life goes on.

I also liked the new opening credits.. and the 'Shemp bat' is freaky and unique to say the least! But my favorite part in "SPOOKS" is yet another great Shemp bit; (when the missing girl's father states his name as George B. Bopper) Shemp: "Oh, a beeee-bopper, dig that craaaaazy bopper name..coool man, real george, gimmie some skin, gimmie some skin!" Then Moe gives him a 3-D fountain pen to the nose. Again Shemp's delivery is perfect! The guy was not only hilarious..I think that he actually was hip and cool for that time. Also, there's the risque line from Shemp, when Larry pulls out the picture of the missing ("BUSTY") girl..Shemp: "That girl has a beautiful PAIR OF EYES!" Over all, "SPOOKS" is a fun, campy short. The 3-D sequences do slow down the comedy and it's definately not their best, but I still think it's enjoyable, unique and "COOL MAN, REAL GEORGE!!!"
