Prolific character actor who began in films during the 1940s, and became a familiar face on television during the 1950s and 1960s, usually cast in blustery, authority roles. Notable as the anti-Semitic hotel clerk in GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT (1947). Recognized most as 'Capt. Huxley' on THE GALE STORM SHOW (1956 - 1960), 'Mr. Bodkin' the bank president on GUNSMOKE (1960 - 1975), 'Adm. Rodgers' on McHALE'S NAVY (1962 - 1965), 'Mr. Cheever' on THE LUCY SHOW (1966 - 1968) and 'Frank Stephens' on BEWITCHED (1967 - 1970).
