Began in the business as a script girl at the Hal Roach Studios, where she worked on the films of Laurel & Hardy, Charley Chase, Our Gang and more. Married Roach cinematographer Francis Corby in 1934; they divorced in 1944. She began to take on character roles in films like IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE and I REMEMBER MAMA. Worked consistently, and achieved lasting fame when she was cast as the grandmother on THE WALTONS (1972 - 1981).
