A popular Chicago nightclub/speakeasy singer in the 1920s, who refused a contract with Al Capone, and was beat up and had his throat slashed. Joe survived, but his vocal chords were severed; he eventually learned to talk after a couple years, but could never sing again. With the help of friends, he went on to become a popular stage comedian. His story was portrayed by Frank Sinatra in THE JOKER IS WILD (1957).
