Rancher Jim Douglass (Gregory Peck) arrives in the gentle border town of Rio Riva, to watch the hanging of four "bravados" (Lee Van Cleef, Stephen Boyd, Albert Salmi, Henry Silva) captured after killing a teller in a botched bank robbery, and who Douglass also believes raped and murdered his wife several months earlier. After the four stage a daring escape that almost kills Rio Riva's Sheriff, Douglass takes charge of a posse. When the fugitives make it across the Mexican border, Jim begins a vigilante hunt to exact his revenge. His vendetta threatens to consume his soul, particularly after he finds that everything that he thought may not be the truth.

Joe DeRita costars as Mr. Simms, the hangman, a significant role on which a major plot twist is based.

Filmed in Technicolor and CinemaScope.
